I would suggest a sorting mode, where directories and files are sorted in one mixed list.
It would look like (if alphabetical sort ist active)
Alpha (Directory 1)
Beta (File 1)
Delta (Directory 2)
Gamma (File 2)
Omega (File 3)
Phi (Directory 3)
...
So also Links (.lnk) to dirs would be sorted along "real" dirs.

P.S. This is not the same as the option Display / Sorting Directories / Like files !
