WiFi plugin, no permision for storage

Post by *Elfje »

I have an issue with the WiFi plugin version 4.5 on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 (android 14). No issues with my phone which is also on Android 14.
Receiving works great after your tip earlier. Sending however does not work due to permissions not available. Once I try to send, the plugin states that it has no access to storage (/storage/emulated/0). Going to the permissions screen does not show storage as a permission to give. It shows camera, nearby devices and notifications. Any tips are welcome.

Google no longer allows "normal" apps to have the storage permission, only certain categories like file managers or backup apps. The app you use the share files via WiFi plugin has to provide the access to the data. For example, when you use the Gallery app to share images, the Gallery app provides the access to the files. If you previously created shortcuts server configurations with file system links on the desktop, you need to delete them and share the files/folders again from Total Commander.

I hope I understand your reply correctly. Normally I start the plugin from Total Commander. I tried starting from Gallery with the same result.

What are you using to receive the files? I tried the following to connect to my Galaxy S24 (Android 14):
- old phone with Android 12
- Windows with Firefox
- Windows with Total Commander and my WebDAV plugin

I had no problems accessing shared files from the Gallery or from Total Commander for Android.
Maybe you have one of these Chinese phones which completely kill apps which are in the background. Since the plugin relies on the sender app to run, it cannot send data if that app is killed.

Setup: Samsung A52S and Galaxy tab S9.
Total commander and WiFi plugin
From A52S to S9 no problem
From S9 to A52S the Wifi plugin on the tab S9 request access to storage. When going to configure, I cannot find storage as a permission to grant.
Apart from the A52S and S9 I have 2 Motorola, no issue transferring either way with A52S or between them. Only issue is sending from Tab S9 requesting access to storage.

I found something. I uninstalled version 4.5 which came from the app store and installed 4.4 from your site. Behold all is working as intended. I am happy again.

I have compared the sources of 4.4 and 4.5, and couldn't find any code which could cause that. Since Android doesn't allow to downgrade apps, yo must have uninstalled 4.5. This may have removed some problematic settings which caused this problem. Could you try installing 4.5 as an update and check whether the problem still exists?

I updated from 4.4 to 4.5 via Play Store, all ok.
I uninstalled, then installed 4.5 from Play Store, all ok.
So yes indeed a wrong bit somewhere.
Thanks for your support.
