7-zip default compression level (split from solid block thread)

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Code: Select all

Compression Level Solid Block Size LZMA2
0 - Store 0 B
1 - Fastest 64 MB
2 1 MB 256 MB
3 - Fast 1 GB
4 16 MB 4 GB
5 - Normal 8 GB
6 64 MB 16 GB
7 - Maximum 16 GB
8 256 MB 16 GB
9 - Ultra 16 GB
Seeing this list and considering that this means that 5 = Normal for 7-Zip, I wonder why TC uses "normal compression (6)" in the "7-Zip Compression" setting.

It's been discussed before from https://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=463483#p463483 on, but probably not in terms of the solid block size, which in fact does differ between 5 and 6.

I have split this message from the thread TC 11.51: Error in 7-Zip Solid Block archiver settings!!! because it's unrelated.

I have chosen to use 6 as default and not 5 because 6 was already the default for ZIP archives.

I think it's a bit confusing to be honest. It might not have consequences for the output size in most cases, but it does introduce an inconsistency with regard to what 7-Zip users are accustomed to.

Just my 2 cents, others might feel using normal (5) introduces an inconsistency in TC, but I don't think there has to be any consistency "between packer settings" if that doesn't align with how the packers actually handle things.
