Dear Christian Ghisler, One of the most useful and frequently used features for me is the Quick Search.
Could you please add an "always-visible" switch or setting to the quick search input field? (I mean that it remains visible as long as it contains at least one character.)
Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

Re: Quick search field always visible
I have considered this, but it has several disadvantages:
1. It takes an extra line of screen space
2. The user still needs to focus the field somehow
3. People could confuse it with the command line and try to run commands from it

I understand your point of view, but I was thinking of a toggle (a "push pin" icon, similar to what’s commonly used elsewhere) that would only be used by people like me—that is, those who frequently use this feature—and who, after weighing the pros and cons, would still opt for the "always visible" setting.
Of course, the default setting would remain the current one, which hides the text box automatically.

It is especially convenient and useful and necessary, I would even say so, to constantly see the panel
from the QuickSearch-eXtended search plugin.
Therefore, I also vote for the support of such functionality.

I find using Alt+Letter the quickest way of finding files / folders and Shift+F7 if more precision needed.

Letters with search dialog is much simpler, with no additional key press.nirsullam wrote: 2026-05-16, 11:07 UTC I find using Alt+Letter the quickest way of finding files / folders and Shift+F7 if more precision needed.

Horst.Epp is right, I don't see the point in permanently displaying when this option is available. We also use this feature all the time.
