Find duplicate files - suggestion for an option

Hi Christian and all,


Here is a humble suggestion about the searching of duplicate files in the second tab of the "Find files" dialog box.

If the others agree... could we, in the settings of TC, have a checkbox for an option to set "Same contents" as default (meaning "preselected") instead of "Same name"?

Since my first use of TC many many many years ago I always need to uncheck "Same name" then check "Same contents" when I search for duplicates in my system.

I would suggest to just have it remember the last used settings.

The problem is that when you re-open the dialog, you would only see the first page - this may be days after you last used the search function, so you will not remember what you set on the other pages.

If you want to always open search with specific settings, do the following:
1. Set all the options you want.
2. Set the "Search in" field to the character > to tell Total Commander to always use the current directory
3. Save the search, e.g. as mydefault or so
4. Create a button, internal command, or hotkey with the command LOADSEARCH and the name of your saved search as the parameter.

Because if you do a NEW search (after you closed your search, feed to listbox, escaped whatever), the "Find Duplicate Files" is ALWAYS unchecked afaik and the current default options same name, same size are checked again.

So in my suggestion, the "Find Duplicate Files" is REMAINS unchecked when you do a new search as it is, BUT it has remembered the last used states (checked/unchecked) of same name, same size, same contents, same plugins fields checkboxes.

So why would I use a saved search if it can just remember the state of the checkboxes?

I do not think it is problem since every group (dates, size, attributes, duplicates) has particular switch (on/off checkbox) and new search switches off each group. Whether you remember or not you have to go to group and switch it on so you can see what is set. If repeated closing the window and re-searching the user can save clicking if each group would have save its setting. Save and load searches needs clicking too, so not always helpful.
E.g. like now the "Find text" group saves its settings. Every new search you have to switch it on to apply but you do not have to change settings in this group since it is saved from previous search.
I think it is good idea if TC would save subsettings for each group in search box.

I agree with this statement.

New search will auto disable “Find duplicate files” which is good, just default setting for “Find duplicate files” to same size and same content checked. Or remember last used.
