[solved] Compare by Content compares two not identical files as having 0 differncies

Post by *petermad »

The two history-en.rtf files in this archive: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/history-en.zip are automatically compared in binary mode showing up with 0 differences, although there (if I compare as non binary) is one different character in line 21.(366 -> 365)

The two files are both compared as ANSI files, and they both have CRLF line breaks and have the same filesize.

This is not new - I see it in older versions of TC too.

Confirmed.

TC does actually find the difference, which is why the Next difference button and Previous difference button are enabled and work to jump to the difference.

Bug introduced in Total Commander 10.00 public beta 1. Perhaps due to this:
29.09.20 Fixed: Compare by content, binary mode: Remember first difference for quicker second pass (32/64)

You are right - clicking "Previous difference" actually highlights the difference.

You are also right about when that was introduced - TC 9.51 does not have the problem, while TC 10.00b1a does.

Confirmed, the difference is displayed but can't be found.

Edit: This happens because the file only contained a 0 byte at the end, far below the first match.

I will fix it.

This should be fixed in Total Commander 11.58 RC3, please test it!
07.06.26 Fixed: Compare by content, binary mode: Differences were displayed but not found when they were considerably above the first character with code 00..06 (used for binary detection) (32/64)
