a little bit off topic - program launcher

Post by *Valman »

Ok, i am a little bit off topic here. Sorry for that. The reason I post here is because I believe that this forum is being read by many power users and other experienced people, whose opinions i would like to hear.

I am looking for a keyboard launcher utility. Till now I have been using Stardock Keyboard Launchpad and sometimes Macro Express. Launchpad is weak because as you add more shortcuts you have to remember more shortcuts (it does not support submenus with which you could group related stuff and thus remember shortcuts easier) while ME is too heavy and slow, not to mention that I don't need all of it's features.

I am looking for a rather simple program (dont want fancy graphics etc) that would have mainly two functions:

a) would be able to assign global shortcuts to programs, eg:
- winkey + q => launch total commander
- winkey + t => launch emeditor etc

b) would be able to support submenus or pop ups within submenus or popups much like ActiveLaunch does (the best of it's category). So that i could do something like that:

winkey + space (for the main menu), then
m for submenu "MS" then
, w => launch winword
, e => launch excel etc
or
winkey + space (for the main menu), then
s for submenu "system"
, c => launch control panel
, a => launch add remove programs etc.

The strange thing is that i have found great proggies that do "A" well (launchpad, AppLaunch) and other proggies that do "B" well (ActiveLaunch) but I have not found any proggie that would do both tasks well and I don't want to use two different TSR launchers.

The program i ended up with, is ActiveKeyboard, but it does not support nested submenus (you have only 1 level popups), so you can't have a single shortcut for a main menu containing all the submenus.

So, does anyone have any suggestions?

1. Suggestion:
Stop using hotkeys to start programs but use aliases like "np" for Notepad instead, they are much easier to remember than cryptic shortcuts and faster than menu navigation in most of the cases:

Yahoo discussion group incl. Beta versions is here, subscription is highly recommended:

With available hotkey plugin you can even create "normal hotkeys" like Winkey+Q if you like.

2. If you really wanna build menus and stuff like that there is no way around PowerPro, it has more features than you can eat:

3. For scripting stuff you can try AutoIt3 or AutoHotkey, see this thread as a starting point:

Thanks icfu!

Today I spent sometime and checked all the proggies you mention, all of which are awesome tools.

I was REALLY astonished by Powerpro (!!). I mean, honestly, is there something that this proggy cannot do?!? It is simply amazing! :O

It will take me sometime to learn this proggy, but it certainly worths the time!

You have been helpful :wink:
