Hope it will be soon, i think most users will rate it very high, especially when custom columns are here... :!:

i'd like to see gridlines too, especially because of the custom columns feature.for instance, i have like 15 columns when sorting mp3s by tags..gridlines would help.

I would prefer 2 different colors for the columns instead of gridlines.
Look to your screen - the colors in this forum alter with the posts - very good IMHO :wink:

But I worry that nevidimka is right!
IIRC never.

Most good file managers have gridlines or alternating colour support, TC is one of the few that don't.
This feature will come sooner or later, TC can't say no to standard features for all times so it will be there in the year 2010 I think. ;)

A delicate solution like the thumbnail boarders we currently have will find me positive. The two-colored line approach can be equally satisfactory if configurable.

Alternating colors for rows would be good, but perhaps more useful would be alternating (or assignable) colors for columns. Especially now with so many useful custom columns.

Colors for columns would complement a request I have made several times for the ability to "freeze" a few columns a la Excel, with the remainder being scrollable. This would make working with many columns much easier.

I would "freeze" filename and maybe size, for instance, and let the rest of the columns be in the scrollable area...

If TC is to advance in this direction, I expect an entirely different approach to implementing the file lists would be necessary (ie., a modern grid control). Such a control would add considerable size to the executable, and though the gui advancements made possible thereby would benefit mouse-centric users such as myself, the majority of TC users seem to be keyboard-centric and would benefit less.

@JohnFredC

Actually, i think mr. Ghislers concerns are more towards 16bit support, although i do not know why considering the fact that the Win64 just came in. :) . (Yeah it's gonna take some time till Win64 settles in but still..)

If that controls you're saying were written exclusively for the TC, they shouldn't be very big, since they do not need much generic code like commercial controls of similar use need, IMHO. But it's still a lot of work.

And yeah, alternating colors could be nice too, but what about custom colors for different filetypes? I allready have problems finding the good contrast between the windowBackground/SelectedItem/FileTypes.. :)

Gridlines = Support. But more Colors? I have enough colors right now through color per filetype... One BackgroundColor is enough as i like to read the filenames :)

I used the term "colors" loosely. I personally would use varying shades of very light gray...

Nevertheless, such colors, regardles of how implemented, should always be optional... as should the gridlines!

Cheers

here's some kind of solution ... preceed each field tag with a "|" character, in the field contents, it look amateurish but still makes it easier to understand...

Yeah, like in this forum ...

That's a must of course - additional freely choosable column colors!

Hope that we won't need such a crutch - because ghisler(Author) will have pity on us, implementing this no way hazardous feature. :wink:

nevidimka reminded us of the following quote:

@ghisler(Author):
Hm, actually we have v6.52 - postponed doesn't mean cancelled - right? :wink:
:arrow: Please give us a short info about the state of development of this feature.
Thanks in advance.
