F4 customization?

I'll try to explain what I want from Total Commander.

After selecting one file I'm pressing F4 (edit). By default, in TC, internal or external editor will be started. Whatever extension file have, the only one editor will be executed.
In DC (another commander I used before TC), there was another "editor stuff". For files, who have "EDIT" action in windows, the assosiated editor was executed. And only for files without "EDIT" action the default editor of DC was used.

in short, I want Total Commander to use "windows-assosiated" file extension-depended editor called by F4.

No. That's not good to use. I mean it is not kinda comfortable. It was so good to push F4 and get the editor you have previously assosiated with that file in DC.... so I'd like to "teach" TC this trick

How about Alt-F3? You can set the associations in Options / Edit/View...

I am not so sure, it does not exactly what you want, but Alt-F3 does.

Choice Editor - is the tool that fits great. I have just tried and it gives me exactly what I wanted (using different editors for different extensions)

ENTER calls default "OPEN" metod. For example, for WAV files, "OPEN" commands PLAYS file, and "EDIT" - opens it in editor. So there are two types of programs for each file extension. One to view, another - to edit.

hm...Alt-F3 is little bit tricky workaround. TC consider it as viewer, i.e. when you modify file, TC will even not refresh panel when you close that editor/viewer. Sure, you can setup WatchDir what will solve problem but it does not work for files in FTP panel. If you will change file in this way in FTP panel, TC will not notice that and it will not prompt you for upload of change

How does it work with ChoiceEditor? I wonder because TC waits for the process to close and checks the filestamp. Now ChoiceEditor closes immediately after calling the editor, so i assume (have not tried it) you will have the same effect.
I dont really use any of those tricks, so maybe you want to check it.

I use ChoiceEditor, and have no problems with updating the files. I checked - the ChoiceEditor is not closed until the editor it called is closed, so editing of files in TC works correctly.

Wow, this tool deserves full attention. Based on your, AlphaOmega's and icfu's recommendation, i installed it, and yes it looks great. When I open a file on my local fileseystem, ChoiceEditor closes immediately, leaving the editor running. In contrast, when I open a file on an ftp, or zip file, ChoiceEditor waits for the editor to close, and closes only after, this way ensuring that the changes will be detected by TC. Wow. How does ChoiceEditor know that it has to stay? Maybe by looking on the path, if it is %TEMP%, then it knows it has to stay? ChoiceEditor is good stuff, respect.
