Sorry, I know I should have read the entire thread before asking but I've been rather harried lately.
Still, even after reading it, I found the thread confusing, though ultimately helpful:
To solve the "imagine.dll not found" problem I encountered, I had to delete the "filter.dll" file from the Imagine/plugins folder. It had a date from 2004, whereas all the other files in that folder had dates from 2005.
My guess is that the error I encountered does not occur in new installations.
