Here are two of the most well-know alternatives:

- Directory Opus v6.0 http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Intro.html
- PowerDesk Pro v5.0 http://www.v-com.com/product/pd_ind.html

But we all know who's the leader! ;)

Don't be afraid ;-)
We are sure that even you try hundered of them you... will back here :-)

Just go to any software catalog (like tucows) and type: "file manager" - you wil get many different programs.

There are also some links here:

When I started adding some more of the fairly serious competitors I remembered the following:

Although we all know who's the leader currently and probably for long time in the future, I think links from here directly to TC's competitors are a bit delicate.

jb,

We'll have to hear from Christian for a final say on the matter, but to be honest...I don't think he cares. TC has every other file manager beat overall.

If Christian says it's okay, I will post an uber-list of file managers. I have tried nearly all of them.

I think the file manager Frigate has more powerful feature than TC has, but weak on its compatibility, speed, resource occupied, etc.

Christian has already expressed his opinion on posting similar info for other file managers but I cannot remember if it was on the old forum or this one. As always he is very open-minded and he said or "clearly implied" that comparing TC with other file managers and discussing about other file managers is accepted in the forum as it can lead to improving TC itself.

TC actually is based on another file manager as an idea and you can find this info in the help file of TC (including its name). Do you think that Christian doesn't follow a little research on other file managers when thinking of a new feature? I think he does and it's the right approach, IMHO. Not to mention that in the Operation section of TC's configurations you see the entry: "Use right mouse button (as in NC)" which refers to Norton Commander.

Let's face it. We live in a world where comparison and competition is part of it and actually we are becoming used to it! Just the fact that we consider TC the very best file manager out there indicates that we follow a comparison approach. It is a very natural thing.

Yes, please post your list! Everyone should have the possibility to use the best file manager for HIS needs - which may or may not be mine.

Btw, if you find a feature in other file managers which you would like to see in Total Commander, let me know! Tabs are such a feature which I'm currently implementing.

However, please do not suggest things which can be done without modifying TC. Examples:
- additional lister file formats, packers or file system: Please suggest a plugin in the plugin forum!
- editors: This can be done very well with external tools, because Windows is a multi-tasking environment. So why re-invent the wheel?
- I cannot promise to implement a certain feature - some are just too special to be used by many users. I don't want to bloat the program, it would become big and slow.

Now this kind of attitude from Christian is what makes him The Man!

Not every software developer would allow mention of competitors' products in the support forum. Now this is the list of the most popular file managers. Granted, I'm bound to miss someone's favorites so they'll just have to add theirs if I miss it.

Listed in alphabetical order for your convenience...

2X Explorer
http://netez.com/2xExplorer/

AB Commander
http://www.winability.com/abcommander/

AccelMan
http://www.flexigensoft.com/accelman/

Ace Explorer

Advanced File Manager
http://www.advexsoft.com/products/products.html

Blue Commander

Directory Opus
http://www.gpsoft.com.au

Drag & File Gold

EF Commander

Enriva Magellan Explorer

Explor2000

FAR Manager

FileQuest XP and Easy Explorer XP
http://www.piquest.com

Frigate
http://www.frigate3.com

GXExplorer
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gxexplorer

Nico's Commander
http://www.nicocuppen.com/nchome.html

PowerDesk Pro 5
http://www.v-com.com/product/pd_ind.html

Servant Salamander
http://www.altap.cz

SmartFile
http://www.ddisoftware.com/smartfile/

SpeedCommander
http://www.speedproject.de/enu/index.html

Tabexplorer
http://www.tabexplorer.com/

Universal Explorer
http://www.spadixbd.com/universal/

WinNavigator
http://www.wnsoft.com/wn/main.htm

WinNc 3000
http://www.dunesmm.nl/winnce/

ZTree
http://www.ztree.com

Whew! That's all I can recall off-hand...nearly every one has a feature or two I'd dearly love to see incorporated into TC, but none have the "total package" of features TC has, either, so TC is my file manager of choice.

Hope this helps!

I also want to mention Unicmd, the (in my opinion) best file manager for PalmOS:

did you try all of this file managers?
can you plz give me a tip which of them support unicode file names, sure I could check all of them, but if you have already installed them ..
You could just copy a string from russian website, paste it as a file name, and try to see it with a file manager. If you mean, its too much work, no problem :), I do it myself, there is a lot of TC users who would be interested in it, I am sure each of this FMs is better then Explorer.

sapiens,

I've probably tried 90% of those over the years. I'm an American so I've never paid much attention to Unicode support as I have little or no use for it in my day to day file managing exercises. Sorry...

And right now the only file manager I have installed is TotalCommander.
I did plug Unicode file manager into Google and came up with one I missed on my original list...

FileMaster
http://www.teammukippe.hg.pl/index_eng/index_eng.htm

Oh, and SpeedCommander listed above offers a Unicode version. It's got a lot of features and is probably closest in look and feel to TotalCommander so you should probably look at that one first.

Hope this helps you out a little bit...

thx for tips, SpeedCommander doesn't support UNICODE, FileMaster and AB Commander do, FileMaster is freeware, AB Commander costs 40$.
All have ensured me that I spent money for TC not in vain :)
