Not every software developer would allow mention of competitors' products in the support forum. Now this is the list of the most popular file managers. Granted, I'm bound to miss someone's favorites so they'll just have to add theirs if I miss it.

Listed in alphabetical order for your convenience...

...

Whew! That's all I can recall off-hand...nearly every one has a feature or two I'd dearly love to see incorporated into TC, but none have the "total package" of features TC has, either, so TC is my file manager of choice.

Hope this helps!
Here are few comparative tables and others OFM.
If TC goes to unicode with internal built in CD/DVD writer will have no competitors. But Directory Opus is closer...

None of those applications don't have such flexibility for users like TC. I have tried few, but TC is the best because have a lot of functionality kept toghether, a good acceptance with other specific applications at exchanging data between TC and them and a confortable way to custom user interface.

Many users hopes and needs are now solved, if you have curiosity to see the history from this forum. All reasonable asks becomes program lines here.

Mr. Ghisler, keep the flag up and go on!

PS I will keep secret  : When will can see the alpha/beta version of TC 7.5? There are 6 mounth from the previous release... Don't worry. We can wait. Do slowly but well what you do.
My Best Wishes,

Eugen

From Korea: NexusFile; Multitab, ftp, breadcrumbs, Multirename tool, bla, bla...

...and an impressive user interface.

Edited/added: Choose "programs" in left menu if you want to view the screenshots.
Link fixed.

I posted the html frame where nexusfile is shown. As consequence the javascript in main frmame is NOT loaded. (sorry)

For view correctly the screenshots go to the main page http://www.xiles.net/ and choose "programs" in the left menu. There, work fine in my firefox and IE7.

They don't work also under FF and opera. Maybe they are meant for lynx? ;)

:) Hello J.-M. !

• I'll give it a try … but needs more languages. I attempt a wild translation
(Unicode file - No numered IDs for the strings = file size 30% fattier than it should)
• Unreadable for me with the black skin, no more readable with the classic one, still black BGs…
- Well, just for the fun, hoping to find out here some features I requested for TC ages ago… :P

The homepage writer should have thought of that situation ;-)

Nice!
I don't like the shortcuts (F12 - is not in english  )

I think, it was a good choice for TC to keep Norton Commander's shortcuts (most of them), making TC user friendly by force of habit.

XYplorer seems to be missing from the big list and not had much comment / discussion (apart from a tiny mention in 2009).

Any used XYplorer? What do you think? http://www.xyplorer.com/index.php

It's been under very active development recently, apparently has lots of features, and their forums are quite also active.

(Interestingly, there seems to be quite a bit of moaning about how TC was the best in the 90's but that their file manager is the best now --- and would be recognised as such if it wasn't for the captive audience TC already has... ;)

Would just like to point out that the last post in this thread is over 6 years ago.

However, I did take a look at this XYplorer, which I have never heard of before, but I just have to say, how can that even be compared to Total Commander? Not in a single screenshot was it shown being capable of displaying two file panels side by side. Maybe the screenshots are just poorly chosen, but if a person likes dual file panels, they will most likely just skip it.
Of all the planets I've been to, this one is my favorite.

Quoting from the XYplorer features list page...
Dual Pane: Look at the contents of two folders side by side. Both panes are optionally multi-tabbed and can be arranged vertically or horizontally. The second pane can be easily shown/hidden by pressing F10.

Perhaps the third screenshot?

Yes, the 3rd screenshot. If you look at the button bar, you'll see three icons: a tree, the two-pane button, and a single-pane button. Also, in the Menu, there is a menu-item called Panes... And in the forum there is lots of commentary about it being a rival for TC.

So I'm quite sure that it would have two panes and many other capabilities like TC.

Certainly, at first glance it doesn't look like an orthodox two-pane file manager because it's being presented with lots of glossy / flashy pictures, etc.

Inferring from the style of the website, tone of the copy, and choices of what to highlight, I think XY is hoping to appeal to a wider audience than the typical power user audience.

There's a number of File Managers that have gotten an update within the last 6-12 months. A couple of them hadn't seen any activity in year(s). The most interesting I've seen apart from when Double Commander came onto the scene a few years back now, was the discovery of Multi-Commander.
