thx for reply! There is exactly the same discussion in the german forum about a Auto Update Function for Total Commander.
I'm not to lazy to download & install this plugin/program (?). It is so that I don't want this kind of automatisation on my box.

I actually do want this kind of automation...
I'm quite happy that Windowa, McAfee, Java, Flash, Firefox etc all do this automatically, even downloading the files for me. And my favorite shareware apps Notetab Pro and Opera at least give a reminder that a new version is available. From my fav apps, only IrfanView and TC don't have it.
I shouldn't have to think too much about keeping programs up-to-date. The newsletter works for me, but I'd prefer an automatic weekly check. E-mail is so 1995 (and rsisks ending up in my spam folder). This check would be just a few bytes, network traffic is not the issue here.
The only downside I see is that it is more work for mr. Ghisler to develop this feature than sending a newsletter.

Personally i don't like this feature.
The newsletter subscription at the main site is enough imo.
I don't see the need of an everyday online check from a software that gets updated once - twice a year..
BTW, i always turn off every automatic check for update (or even worst, an automated download/update of any program file) with the exception of the virus scanner.

When discussing auto-updating there is a difference between an automated notification and automated downloading / installing. I personally dislike most software to install updates, but I do like to be told about an update so I can install it at my discretion.
Naturally this should be configurable so people can choose (not) to have the notification, specify the interval and maybe even indicate whether they want beta's or not.
Apart from TC (+ Irfan and Truecrypt), all my common tools (Firefox, Skype, Trillian, Acrobat, MS Office, TomTom, Nokia) use a form of update notification, and I must say I appreciate that very much.
@Marlby23: TC 7 went from 7.0 to 7.04a in 6 steps within approximately one year, and each time of course with the recommendation to update as soon as possible.

As for me, I like to use the latest version of software with new features and bugfixes. I vote for this feature.Marlby23 wrote:Personally i don't like this feature.
