Also does anybody know of any other ftp client that does have this feature (and maybe freeware)?
FTPDrive does the trick really.

I use TextPad, many files are open in it, I edit a file with F4 on the ftp pane, save it, but don't close TextPad. TC checks the process, but apparently not the time stamp of the file in the temp folder. It would be nice if TC asked the question if I want to upload the changed file.
The drawback: anytime I switch to TC i get this question if I modified the file previously.
So the feature should be optional.
How about this idea?
Christian, please?

For FTP I just use TotalCommander just as it is what it is called: The swiss army knife. It has a fine blade, but when hunting bears and crocodiles I use a real knife.

WinSCP is able of uploading changed file in the background, tunneling connections, launching putty, can do FTP, SCP and SFTP, has an interface which is almost like TC, is free and small and good.
Ah and it is portable like TC.

I use TC's FTP feature only for some quick up- and downloads.

Netdrive (the Novell [free?] version) isn't capable of using SFTP or SCP afaik.

OT: SanskritFritz: I envy you - I can't get the syntax of Autohotkey in my head. Wish Autoit would all this hotkey features from Autohotkey.

Support too. But that implies that TC should check file's date periodically.

Not periodically. Just when it gets focus, like it does now with the current directory.

yes i need this feature too

Christian PLEASE :) put it on your todolist, not on your whishlist.

As somone mentioned before, this is the swiss tool we all use. It saves me A LOT of time.

I am actually willing to support this feature financially.
(make it work and i will buy more licenses, or something)

I know this is NOT what TC was initially intended for, and the ftp client came across, just as a nice feature, however a feature that most of us use it on a daily basis.

Anyway, Christian, keep up the good work. We love you.

I see. We think that you should express your love for ghisler in a personal love letter, because we don't share your feelings.
