Yes, it's a good idea. Only thing you haven't mentioned is the NTFS disk. I'am sure you know about this.

The link is a good idea and I used it before. However, when you work with several computers and need to copy folders from one to another, it would not be proper to use the link. Once I copy a folder containing the link of files, the files will not be copied. The problem will become very big when you have 1000 folders to be handled.
I would like to revive this thread since it was a very good idea then and it's still a verrrry good idea now.
Unfortunately this feature is still missing in Total Commander even though similar file browsers like Xplorer2 or XYplorer had integrated this in their recent versions. It would make my digital life more productive and efficient. Imagine I have a folder of Documentaries. Since they are mixed genres I cannot split them into folders and here Tags would really come in handy.
I agree, this should be a OS feature but even with the latest Win 8.1 Microsoft has failed in providing a full featured file manager. They promised a long time ago a new File System that would work super fast more like a database structure which was supposed to come with Longhorn if I properly remember but years later we are still stuck with NTFS.
Well, what do you think guys about the idea now that mode than 5 years have past?

Exactly! I think tags will play a big role in the file browsing of the future.solid wrote:Yes, we are using the comments, but still want the tags. It's a big improvement over comments.
So can you please tell us Christian if it's possible to have tags in Total Commander? Or should this be integrated at the OS/File System level?
I definitely agree with you. Imho TC is still missing the greatest feature, a good/efficient Tag/Keyword feat (e.g. xplorer^2)dpcdpc11 wrote:Exactly! Example about a great note taking program with very efficient Tag/Keyword system

I use tags in Cintanotes, but a note taking program has nothing to do with the topic.sticazzi wrote:I definitely agree with you. Personally I'm magaging data in terabytes sizes with TC since years and never missed tags.

Is there any standard for storing tags, like storing comments in descript.ion files? Where does Xplorer^2 store them? It wouldn't be very useful to have a function which is limited to TC only...

Hmm, this seems to be about comments, not tags. Or do you mean mp3 tags?

Yep, comments managed as tags and stored inside files:ghisler(Author) wrote:Hmm, this seems to be about comments, not tags.
______________
Use Actions > Set comment menu command to add a description (note) and/or one or more tags to any picture, video or generic document. Then you can use comment (tag) rules to locate, filter and select files that match a tag. See how this works in today's demo video ( http://www.zabkat.com/blog/wink/tagin.htm ).
xplorer² stores comments within the file (literally for structured storage files like office documents, and using parallel streams for other types). It doesn't need separate files like descript.ion and such for the comments. When you move files around your hard disk the comments are moved along like any integral part of the file.
* xplorer² can add comments to all files on NTFS formatted partitions. If you want to copy such files onto FAT storage (e.g. USB stick) that doesn't support parallel streams without losing the comments, you can use Actions > ADS > Bundle to go menu command.
