I will go back to TC quick search dialog.
I use polish caracters. I can access them with Left Ctrl+Left Alt or with Right Alt, e.g RightAlt+o to get ó.
TC is configured this way that Alt+key starts quick search.
I cannot start the quick search dialog with Right Alt nor With Ctrl+Alt. But I can start quick search with Left Alt + any key. If I want to search for filename beginning with Polish character, first I have to start with normal character (e.g. Left Alt+A) than I press backspace and type the Polish characters with Right Alt or Ctrl+Alt. It is a bit inconvenient, but I do not use Polish characters in filename too frequently (espacially at the beginning of file).
To sum up: I am able to type Polish characters in quicksearch, but I am not able to open quicksearch window with Polish characters.

I checked it further, when you have TC configured to be opening quicksearch with Ctrl+Alt it causes problems. I have difficulties typing Polish characters, somehow eg. letter o is "preferred" rather then Polish "ó". But It seems it is because of misinterpretation of Alt+Ctrl. Also my right Alt key causes the same problems (Right Alt (it's AltGr) is equal to pressing Ctrl+Alt.), e.g RightAlt+A opens quicksearch starting with letter A, but normally it should show a Polish character in command line.
This behaviour occures when you have quicksearch opened by Alt+Ctrl. If you have quicksearch only with Alt then it seems to work almost OK (see my previous post).
I recommend switching to Alt+key to open quick search. Disadvantage - difficulty to access menu. But there is easy workaround.
Instead of Alt+F to open menu File, just type Alt, F - I mean press and relese Alt then press F. It's really quick and convenient. You only need to get used to.
To switch - go to menu Configuration / Options / Operation, section "quick search"

BTW: It is my 100th post in this forum!!! :!: Yeah, TC rules!!!!
 Cheers!

Unfortunately this method doesn't seem to work at my computer (WinNT). Even if I use only Alt+Letter for quick searching and delete the typed earlier letter I'm not able to type "a" with right Alt - it just type only "a". I can do it using e.g. "~" before "a" but it's not too convenient.

Hmmm..., I use WinXP. As far as I remember, on Win98 it worked too. But possible that NT acts differently.
