By adding 256 you not just alter the icon, but tell TC that the extension is not archive at all. Packed file can no longer be opened inside the panel by double-clicking. You have to press Ctrl-PgDwn to achieve this then.

Well to sum all the above, in the way I understood it: :)
Please correct if I'm wrong

1. For all archives, TC shows its own (or user created/changed) archive icons, on positions 8 and 9 in the icon library.

2. It is possible for archive types added via plugins, to override this setting on a way Icfu described, but this only tells TC that this particular filetype is not an archive, so TC shows its originial icon.

3. Archive types known internaly by TC can only have one icon (the one under 1.)

4. Archives known to TC internally: ARJ, LHA, RAR, ACE, UR2, TAR, ZIP. (is this correct?)

Conclusion: All archive in 4. can have only one icon, which can be changed. All other archives, added with plugins, can have theirs icon, if TC is told that that filetype is not an archive.

So, it is not possible to have different icons for ex. ZIP and RAR!
