I see - so can you strart them when you move them to some other folder, e.g. to c:\totalcmd? You don't need to install something to test this - just start the installer and then immediately abort it.

Not sure at the moment; however, a few minutes ago I just discovered another weirdness (probably related)... I've been used to type "notepad FILENAME" in the TC's command line quite often to make a quick txt file in the current directory. Well, this time I got the error (5). Tried typing "procexp" (which resides in c:\bin) and pressing ENTER, worked ok.

So I tried focusing to another folder. Typing "notepad", I got the same error there. Then I changed to c:\bin (where various other utils are), and typed "notepad" there again. And it worked. The weird part is that "notepad FILENAME", after this, worked in the first folder normally. Maybe it was a coincidence or maybe something changed during my tests, but I'm keeping it "under observation" for the time being.

EDIT: I just wanted to install a new piece of software.
-Downloaded the setup file from teh internets, scanned it for viruses...
-Double-click on it returned the error.
-Moved the file using F6 to another folder.
-Double-click on it, got the security dialog box, and the installation started.

I think it's almost solved, it seems to be a bug or at least a "feature" definitely related to IE10.
Windows 7 for sure, but someone needs to confirm this on Win 8.
See also here a similar issue (in German).

Someone already posted a bug report here.

The problem exists when you're in a Symbolic Link Folder,
from in there the API calls seem to be garbaged/broken with IE10 installed.
So TC has a problem launching the file from there, Explorer doesn't.

Thanks for the input, that's probably it. I'll try to download to another folder (i.e. not Downloads) next time and see what happens.

I can confirm, that after installing IE10 on Win7, users lost several permissions concerning symlinks, e.g. executing an application in such folders. That is definitely a bug. In Windows 7, not in TC.

I don't see such issues in Windows 8.

Is your download dir a symlink or a real folder? You can right-click on it and see, if it is a shortcut or not.

TC has a workaround on Windows 8 to avoid this bug (which was there since the start of Windows 8): It resolves the link to its original location, and then launches the program from there. I didn't expect that Microsoft would backport such a bad bug to Windows 7.

Anyway, I will have to handle this link problem on Windows 7 too in the next version. Any idea whether Windows Vista will also get IE10?

I can now confirm -- downloading a setup.exe file into another folder (not thru a symlink) and running it did not reproduce the error.

(The Downloads folder on my computer can be accessed either thru a symlink or directly, and it turned out my browser was remembering to download it thru the symlink. :) )

I still have no idea, how symlink permissions are connected to the Internet Explorer. But it really seems to be culprit. Anyway, Microsoft does no longer support Vista and IE10 is and will be available only for Win7 and Win8.

Good to know - I will have to add the workaround for Windows 7 and only then.

Does anyone know how to detect the installed IE version, e.g. via registry?

Most likely:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
"Version"="10.0.9200.16384"
#5767 Personal license

It seems that I just encountered the very same problem. Is there already a suitable workaround until a fixed version will be released? e.g. can I enable the Win8-Workaround somehow?

Regards

Opening the file via right click context menu may work.
