Or maybe - instead of "From left (1)" and "From right (2)" - use "From the current panel (1)" and "From the opposite panel (2)"?, along with placing these buttons in the left/right or right/left manner, depending on which panel is currently active?

I suggest to use "source", "target" or "active", "inactive"-panel, considering that any dedicated spatial adjective is incorrect because the panel arrangement can be switched between horizontal and vertical!

I agree on that - and then not switch the buttons when the source changes from left to right

I prefer from left/right instead of source/target.
Compromise: I could use
"From Left (Source) (1)" "From Right (2)"
and
"From Left (2)" "From Right (Source) (1)"

It would be more elgant then with
"From Left (1)" "From Right (2)"
"From Top (1)" "From Bottom (2)"
"From Left (2)" "From Right (1)"
"From Top (2)" "From Bottom (1)"

Depending on the panel's alignment

I prefer from left/right instead of source/target.
I think left/right are good enough given the fact that these two words are also used in comparing files and synchronizing directories regardless of the alignment of the file panels. There are some twenty strings with left/right hard coded in them and I suppose Mr Ghisler would be reluctant to change that.

After some more tests, I will now use source/target as suggested by MarcinW, if the translations exist. Otherwise, I will use LEFT/RIGHT.

The strings will be:
"From active panel (source)"
"From target panel"

The former will use a larger button and be placed on the left side if the source is on the left/top, and on the right side otherwise.
