Problem with folders with special chars in names \ and /

did you tried standard scandisk or some utility like diskdoctor (symantec)?
yeah, DiskEditor can help definitely, because you can change file name direcly on disk, but if you do not know what you are doing, you can lose data on your disk.

You know that I didn't propose to delete the Dir with 'del' but to remove it with 'rd'?

One Thing you could try is to boot a rscue Linux CD like Knoppix and mount the partition an try to delete the folders.

But in any case it is a good idea to backup all you data before.

And after all is format the partititon a solution.

If you don't know by now what a disk editor is good for I really advise you against the use of it. You will be able with a disk editor to make all the data of all you partitions on your drive completely unaccessable.

Just curious: is it possible to boot ME to the DOS promt (just like Win98) or boots it always up to GUI?

Thanks for the offer, but I don't like ME at all. I had it never installed myself and each time I saw it insatlled anywhere I got only troubles because it behaves nor similar to Win98 neither to NT/XP.

I am asking you once again - did you tried to run standard Scandisc (is part of ME) or cmd-line chkdsk (not sure if chkdsk is part of ME)? It should detect those directories as wrong and offer you to delete them

I just checked here under XP Pro SP2:

Although chkdsk was runing succesfully( after restart because it couldn't be locked) the folder "c:\test\a " wasn't touched at all.

Well, I could create these folders with 'a / \ ' as folder name, but I could delete them like this:
1. Switch into folder 'a ' - it contains folder ' '
2. Press button with command cm_SwitchLongNames
3. Delete the strangely named folder
4. Switch one dir up
5. Delete the strangely named folder

But in spite of all I thing that TC couldn't let me set such a nemed folder like "aaa / \"
