The extension works with the same .list files as the TC plugin, and due to browser integration additionally supports https:// and ftp://

The readme file contains inter alia information:

4. SSL and HTTPS. For checking https pages plugin need libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll.
Put these files to appropriate subdirs in plugin main directory:
x64_ssl_dll\ for 64-bit dll's and x86_ssl_dll\ for 32-bit dlls.
PATH to dll's can be set in versions.ini: SslDllPath_x64= and SslDllPath_x86=.
Known working dlls' can be downloaded from https://indy.fulgan.com/SSL/

I tried to use the plugin with an entry in my version.ini

You can only extract from static content (not generated by any script or rcp...). The most important is that you need to find a simple expression from the entire content with "where you start looking" from where you extract, where you stop all in the middle is your version number (ideally should be a string) and last but not least you stop at the first match for the starting point !
so for kodi a way to get it is using :

you can do the same for the nightly build, other platform,....
in this sample you will extract the version number from the first occurence of downloadable item than ends -"x86.exe".
