CTRL+S is not a big problem (at least for me) ... but it should be
! search as you type - SUBSTRING - filter (like in freecommander) !

Super! Setting "Letters - with search dialog" and clearing "Begining ..." in the Quick Search Configuration creates exactly the system behavior I was looking for.
