TwinKey in it's early versions was quite unstable. At this point in time though, if it has caused any TC crashes then there's been very few of them. On a very slow machine 5+ years old, you may notice some slowdown in scrolling or flickering in the file panels... Other than that --- not so much.
There's quite a few enhancements of TwinKey that I find indispensible,
1) Automated Views for specific directories by path.
2) Ability to apply background images (automatic: think MP3 Artist folders).
3) Colored tabs, icons on tabs (can be automatic, based on folder path)
4) Sticky Files.
5) Inactive cursor highlight.
Among a handful of other features.
Whether someone wants to consider it a hack, that is certainly their perogative. I think it's a shame that TC has languished in basic usability that has prompted so many "hacks", scripts and external fixes to get around TC's quirks and limitations.

does it require a running background process?

No, TwinKey is a wdx plugin.

There is definitely an undeniable and objective advantage to know what the current file in the inactive pane is....
Okay you can construct a reason for this special case (I assume you are using a parameter like
%P%N %T%M).
chrizoo wrote:HolgerK wrote:An additional cursor in the inactive panel can be confusing
(Aside from being optional) the user can choose a very unobtrusive color scheme
May be hard to find for an non inverting cursor.

BTW: did you realize that
billiebubs suggestions was primarily about the cursor of the
active panel of an
inactive (non focused / background) TC?
Thread titles alone can be confusing

Everything I have written above is true, I didn't construct anything.
May be hard to find for an non inverting cursor.
what?

no, I have missed that indeed. If I'm talking about a completely different thing, I should start a new thread.

than how can there be a performance penalty as was alledged?

what?
Opposite to the inverting cursor color, it's harder to find a unintrusive
and significant different color (or if possible line style) for the
inactive rectangular non inverting cursor.

I never wrote "significantly different color", but almost the opposite:
(Aside from being optional) the user can choose a very unobtrusive color scheme (i.e. one that almost matches the background color), so that it's not visually distracting, but when you expressly look for it you can still (barely, but without problems) find it.

With very bad default colors with aero.
chrizoo wrote:I never wrote "significantly different color", but almost the opposite
Without a significant different cursor it's harder to distinguish source and target panel.

huhm ??
I thought we're talking about a cursor which does NOT EXIST currently (no distinction at all). So NOTHING can be "harder to distinguish" than "no distinction at all", right?
This discussion is so painful (not your fault), because image embedding is not allowed on this board and without that it's like blind people talking about color.

It would become harder to distinguish where the source and the target panel is:
Left ____|_ Right
%P%N _|_ %T%M
Is the cursor on the left or on the right side?
Is it blue or is it red?
Especially if the cursor is only a thin colored line surrounding the filename.

The cursor is in neither place until TC regains focus, but when it does, the Active/Source Panel will be on the left side
on the file: _TMPWD.out_, whereas the Target Panel (right side) will be on the file: TC_EmptyDirsDELETE.ahk.
