You had activated the thumbnail preview mode in cPicture? Alt-8?

Yes, that view.

Did you try to check "Show large preview"?
Check it, and hover over a thumbnail with the mouse pointer ...
... a very fine feature IMHO! :D

It's activated by default IIRC so I had to find a way to turn it off. ;)
So, no idea if your jpegs are specially prepared from cPicture to allow faster viewing?

I give up then, let's wait for other testers.

Hmm, sounds to me like cPicture is using the preview images which some digicams create and store inside of the .jpg files. This is extremely fast, but many image editors do not update these preview files when you edit the main image, so the preview images may not actually show what the main image contains...

I've contacted the author of cPicture. He read this thread and mailed back some clearing information.

Yes, this is the reason why cPicture shows thumbs so rapidly.

 Oh sh**, I did!

Author of cPicture told me to delete all user information from the 331 JPEGs, to get comparable conditions for the 3 competitors.

And here are the new results FYI:

cPicture: 152 seconds
IrfanView: 97 seconds
XnView: 97 seconds

Don't know why deleting of user the information affected the loading time of IrfanView and XnView,
but the reverse tendency to cPicture gave me a shock!

Now we know what xnview will implement. It should be an option, right?

But the feature is VERY useful when working with my own photos! Now the question is: will it be implemented in Imagine or IrfanView?
I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!

I doubt that, because of the reason I gave above (preview not in sync with main picture). The main problem is that there are many different possible formats for these preview pictures, including uncompressed and jpeg-compressed. Maybe someone with some free time can modify my jpegthumbs plugin combined with my exif plugin to implement such a thumbnail extractor...
