I haven't yet made up my mind about which editors to keep "alive", so I have all of the above...

This means that except for UE I lnow none well enough, and they stay "alive" on my disks forever <G>

UE has great and user defined syntax highlighting, and manages rectangular boxes as expected, and has a mini macro facility. Today it is enough.

In the past, my programming languages had no valid IDE, so I used plenty of powerfully edittable/"programmable editors like IBM's Edit, and then PEdit which was by far the best, even by today's standards.

Unfortunately when Windows started, this Personal Editor III became SlickEdit which has quickly become BLOAT ware (I should use larger font <g>).

Pedit stopped working under Windows. So came UE and the rest of them.

Peter

Yes !!! This is it, (I think. the Help looks a lot like the one I remember) but I had earlier versions <G>

The Personal Editor vIII was an editor in which you could re-program anything and link the C-style routine(s) to any key combination. You could also have different key combinations for different tasks!

Balderstrom,

>> ...whatchya gonna do now, there's a WinPedit

<LOL> No, it is still DOS <G>

Boofo,

>> Have you tried EditPlus?

Yes, and didn't "adopt" it. Thanks.

@ Eitang, how closely did you read the page?
Check out also our newer version for Windows, WinPedit.
WinPedit is the Windows version of the DOS era Pedit program.

Being a DOS program, Pedit's drawbacks were the limited amount of memory available to the program, and not being able to use long filenames and copy/paste to other programs under WinNT, Win2000 & WinXP.

Pedit is now converted into a real 32 bits Windows program. While maintaining its DOS look and feel, WinPedit is a real Windows program.

The new WinPedit version 6 has implemented tabbed editing, the same way you are used to in your favorite FireFox browser.
Emphasis Mine.

@ Boofo, EditPlus is missing four things that I can see from playing with it for about an hour.
1) Syntax Hilight: cannot use different fonts, only colours.
2) Context Menu: Cannot customize.
3) Gutter[line #s]: Cannot use a different Font.
a) Gutter: No separate Context Menu from the Edit Window.
4) Tabs: Cannot close by double clicking on Tab.
a) Tabs: Unable to specify min|max width of tabs.
b) Tabs: Unable to have multi-line Tabs.
c) Tabs: No <- -> Arrows for scrolling thru tabs, instead once you have a lot open, their "title space" gets smaller.

And I would prolly overlook all those things, if they were forward thinking enough to allow Tabs on the left/right and to specify the Width/Height and Font for Tabs. The Context Menu is also a big deal, I like to have *useful* things in there, instead of multiple keyboard shortcuts, or digging thru Main Menus. As is, the context menu is so bad, as to have nothing on it I would go to a context menu for, ie bookmarks/code folding.

Cool things:
1) The Splitter.
2) Ease of adding a new Custom Language Hilighter.
3) F11 Window Menu.
4) Code Folding
5) Functioning "Column-Mode Select" & Paste.
6) Customizable Menus+Toolbars.
Other stuff that works mostly as it should for a current day editor, Bookmarks, Projects, etc.
7) Did I mention the Splitter? :-)
(Though I wish each of the splits could optionally get their own scroll bars) It doesn't even make sense how the horizontal scroll affects both top and bottom.

Free, I might keep it around. Paid for, it needs to Improve Usability of Tabs and ContextMenu customization. Tabs as is, almost feel like an afterthought.

Balderstrom,

I've been using it for years and it is all I use for editing my site PHP files. They have a Yahoo forum with a lot of the Gurus that can answer most anything and find ways around anything in EditPlus. An hour doesn't give you much time to really delve into it.

The author is adding things and updating the program constantly so what might be missing now will surely make its way into the program eventually if enough users ask for it.

Balderstrom,

>> @ Eitang, how closely did you read the page?

Indeed, not closely enough. I saw #download# and did it <G>

Thank you, I'll have a second look...

Is there a meaning to the @ before my name in your posts?

No, it means he is speaking "at Eitan". Like the "2Eitan" that happens here when you click the username. I use the @ when speaking to someone specifically on some sites myself and have for years.

@Eitan *grin*

I have found "@" is a cleaner way to talk "TO" someone or in regards "TO" their most latest Post on a forum, than some places where everyone is constantly quoting each other (and sometimes the whole post) - even when their posts follow in chronological (right after each other) order... which makes for tedious reading at best, you have to at least passingly read the quote - instead of not having to read it, as it isn't necessary as the two posts in question are akin to a conversation. Imagine doing that in real life -- i.e. repeating what someone just said to you, so you can respond.

2Username, seems more common here... but I just have used @ for ages - everywhere.

2<Name> just happens to be what is inserted into the quick reply field when you click on someone's name.
