Hi majki!

Thx for the alert. It's a great download manager and my favourite too.
Never thought that it would go free - Net Transport went the other way from free to really-annoying-nagware. They both appear to use the same engine and I asked NT's author about it but he didn't reply - probably because I didn't include a 'donation' .

BTW, nice flicker-free Viewer demo, dude. Actually Lister's flickering doesn't trouble me much (my brain flickers a lot  ) but reloading per display instance is unquestionably inefficient and intellectually unsatisfying. Hope Ghisler fixes it internally.

Keep up the good work!

FastStone Screen Capture Utility

Post by *Lesmo16 »

FastStone Capture is a powerful, flexible and intuitive screen-capture utility. It allows you to capture anything on the screen including windows, objects, full screen, rectangle regions, freehand-selected regions and scrolling windows/web pages. It has innovative features such as a floating Capture Panel, hotkeys, resizing, cropping, text annotation, printing, e-mailing, screen magnifier and many more.

Hi Squire.
Thx for the alert. It's a great download manager and my favourite too.
Better then that, you can connect it with Opera without plugin. New version will add support in Opera 8. It changes the menu file, so if you want support in Opera 9 it is enough to copy/paste this 2 new items in the menu definition you are using.
BTW, nice flicker-free Viewer demo, dude.
Oh no .. it is not flicker-free at all.. it just flickers less, and with every new version of QV script it becomes "less less" since I am adding docking features and other make-up things. AHK is limited here as system wide programming language as it main purpose is to hook keyboard and mouse, while this situation requires QV to hook windows movement, resizing etc. I am able to rewrite this AHK script in Delphi or C but I rarely use QV because of this f annoyance. With Alex's Viewer integration in the system, and who knows what else (Phothoshop ? Fruity Loops? Explorer ? Anything that you need QV acctualy) is very easy, and can be done within a day, but rewriting in other language will take time, and lot of testing (I know, I did many system wide hooks already and those are notorious since every little mistake can burn your OS, and issue some fantastic messages you don't ever get in normal usage, like "kernel is not responding" :) ) So, this is really Ghislers move ! The amount of programming he have to do is minimal, and only he can announce new API and recomend its usage. This request is also supported by many users so I really don't know why ignoring this. And finally, as a last conclusion, I must agree with you: current functionality is intellectually unsatisfying. :)
my brain flickers a lot
Then you have 2 flickers... Lister and your brain. It must be a nightmare.

FlashGet
Simly the best download manager.
I guess I don't have to say anything more about this famos program except that it is finally free.

I'm using FDM - http://freedownloadmanager.org/ - this is free since quite a while.
Why do you think FlashGet is better?

For those still interested in the browser wars, ExtremeTech has an informative comparative feature about "Which New Browser Is Best: Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, or Opera 9?"

Convert me!
No conversion is really needed IMHO - all browsers and download managers (and coffee-making machines for that matter) have a well-defined job to do and there are no sensational break-throughs AFAIK to make anyone abandon one in favour of another. Most have the same features (like segmented downloads, bandwidth controls, resume, scheduling, etc) so if you're happy with FDM then there is no compelling reason to switch to Flashget.

I've never used FDM so can't do a pro/con comment, maybe another forumer could oblige. I have used other managers like Getright, Net Transport, and many others long since uninstalled and can only list the aspects of Flashget that keep it as my preference:

[1] simple, uncluttered interface
[2] optional background colour to enhance readability
[3] easy wildcard function for batch downloads
[4] no problems with .mms files and ftp
[5] accepts plain text file list to download
[6] built-in browser to pick links directly
[7] site login/password on a per-file basis
[8] single-click to lock default download parameters
[9] always-on-top drop-zone & graph to keep an eye on progress without having to look at the task/notification bar or download window
[10] pop-up alert if URL is a repeat
[11] good integration with Opera (finally!)

Wishlist: The ability to automatically create and save files in a folder tree based on all or part of the download URL, just like Getright.

A gem:
True X-Mouse Gizmo
If you know how X windows works, you know what it is.
Works perfectly, although there is no gui for the VERY useful settings. But a TC user is fairly used to edit ini files... so make sure you read the docs!

majkinetor ! wrote:I have seen QuickSilver documentation and I must say I am amazed. I just want to try that myself, on PC, probably with virtual machine if nothing else available. Is anybody informed about running MAC OS X at PC ? I would like to start building this thing, but I first want to learn somehting from QS expperience.
Can't help you there, what i do have is a great demo to give you an idea of what quicksilver can do.

Speaking of QuickSilver, there was Launchy as a PC alternative, so I recommend a Launchy alternative now, written in AutoHotkey:
320MPH - Ultra Fast Anything-Launcher by Rajat. I already dumped Launchy, though i liked it. But it stays resident, occupying 10M from my memory, while 320mph is not in memory and does the same thing. Not skinned tho :-/

Hm, it doesn't do the same thing, or am I overlooking the database? In fact it's something like Find and Run Robot, a "little" less comfortable though:

I dont know what database you are speaking about, but reading the features list of FaRR, I find that 320mph does exactly the same thing. Just like Launchy.
