Sure you have: just drag the TAB to move and drop it on another TAB. It will be moved behind this TAB.

You are right, but in this case TC is hardly to blame. Everwhere you read about "tabs" as in "tabbed browsing" etc. And the name "tabstops" has been used for ages, even before PCs where existing.

TC could of course use other names for tabs and/or tabstops, but I think C. Ghisler feared to confuse the users.

Obviously users are confused now. When folder tabs were introduced Ghisler should have investigated if there are any ambiguous terms.
I don't think users would have a problem if tabstop headers would be called column headers.

There are many other wording problems in TC especially inconsistencies. For example you could ask why custom columns are not called custom tabstops...

"Tabstop" name has to do with the technical detail of how the list is implemented.
Users should never know that, so there's no question that it should be column headers.

Sheep, old buddy, you can't say "splitted" - the simple past tense of 'split' is also 'split'! Ya gotta say 'has been split from ...' instead. It's one of those Old English irregular verbs (borrowed from Dutch 'splitten'?) that causes no end of trouble.

BTW, the word 'sh!t' is in the same category. It's 'sh!t, sh!t, sh!t' - present, past and future, and also when your team loses by a penalty!

Actually Ghisler is perfectly correct in his use of the word 'tab' and it's not ambiguous at all.

In English it's defined as 'A short strip of material attached to or projecting from something in order to facilitate opening or identifying or handling it'. I know of no other synonym for the word.

A tab 'stop' is only a point for for the carriage of a typewriter to halt at and is so used in a word processor to mean a mark for the cursor to jump to.

A 'column header' is simply what it says: the head of a column e.g. Filename, Ext, etc.

You guys will have to dream up some new name if you don't like 'folder tabs'!

• In French, it's = Header to sort (En-tête pour tri) originally, and I use = “Tabs of sorting” (Onglets de tri) in the Tutorial too.
- SQUIRE is quite right about the definition of "Tab", it's exactly the same than in French; it's a general term which can be applied as well to the notch on the blade of a Swiss knife that helps to pull¦open this blade… as to this kind of button that proliferates in programmes.
And there is no more synonym in French than in English…

- I wonder to know if you have more specific¦precise words in German ?

The name is "Karteikartenreiter" with the short form "Reiter".

IMHO the "Tabs" should be called "Flags" in English.
A flag is that small labeled grip part of a file card.
