More file info as tooltip

Post by *pdavit »

A column I've been missing sometimes on TC is the File Type column. In addition, I bumped into a quite useful feature of another file manager (PowerDesk) where entering an archive the columns change dynamically getting two more information the Compression Size column and the Ration of the compression column.

If I can recall well, Christian mentioned that he is not planning to add more columns on TC or that is not currently possible or maybe that he is thinking of doing that but not in the near future.

Whatever the case, I think it would be a nice idea and an alternative workaround to new columns if we could get this information (i.e. File Type, Compression Size or Compressed Size and Compression Ration) as a tooltip over a file along to a series of other info you might find useful. We could see a new entry in the configuration of TC where we specify the toolpit for truncated filenames, which can read something like "View additional file info as a tooltip".

So, what do you think guys? Do you find this suggested feature useful? What other information would you like to see as a tooltip?

AFIK TC show standard Windows tooltip. So only thing you need is to find in internet (or write :)) appropriate Explorer extension and ... voila!

I wouldn't use it: would just take up space and make the interface more full. The file extension says enough for me....
But if Christian has some time...why not ?

I would like to see it as an extension of the FileInfo plugin:
- Using FileInfo view on archives could show compressing info (example: rar solid archive yes/no ?, recovery record present, compression ratio etc...)
- Using FileInfo view on Images: show image pixel size and color depth etc...
So if François still has some time...?

Good idea, I also often need to get quickly this information but how do you imagine it?
Would you like to see the picture information on F3 instead of the picture itself?

This is how PowerDesk does it: http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/pdavit/tooltip.png

The plug-in is an excellent tool but a tooltip has the advantage of speed.

I've heard before tools that produce tooltips; do you have any good ones to suggest? PowerPro had something similar if I can remember, is that correct?

2pdavit Sorry, i cannot recommend such tool because i personnaly don't like this idea :), but just search for "shell tooltip extension" in google and you'll find lot of them.
Some interesting examples:

would like to see it as an extension of the FileInfo plugin:
- Using FileInfo view on Images: show image pixel size and color depth etc...
Here's a tooltipper I wrote some time ago:
http://pepperoni.fm.pl/zbooy/prog/jpegtooltip.zip
It shows basic jpeg info _plus_ exif. Very useful for digital camera files. Tested and used on Win2k. Installation details inside the archive.

One more thought: how about a new optional column in the file pane, named - say - "Info"? It could show text output from a new kind of plugin. For MP3 files this could be "2:20 192 kbps stereo", for JPG "1600x1200 24 bits" etc.

Then again I think it must have been discussed before :-)

All the tooltip applications you've suggested here guys work fine on Explorer but not with TC I guess due to a different build architecture. :(

That's actually a very nice suggestion. As an extension to that we can have the ability to configure what the type of the additional information will be based on the individual users' needs. Yes, a column of the general nature sounds equally good. But I can still remember Christian mentioning that an additional column is not currently possible or planned. Christian?

Strange. Do you have two last options in Configuration|Display|Help texts set?
