New "Virtual mode" of a Tab

Post by *DexBG »

The idea:
When the "Virtual mode" of a Tab is turned on, the shortcut (*.lnk) files will be seen as shortcuts’ target files in the Tab instead of as themselves.

For example – you have folder containing the shortcut file 'flower.bmp.lnk' which points to ‘flower.bmp’ file. Switching on the Virtual mode of the Tab will result in showing the ‘flower.bmp’ file instead of 'flower.bmp.lnk file'.

The achievements in this case:
1. All the operations will be executed on the target file instead of on the shortcut file (e.g. View command will open for view the target file instead of the *.lnk file)
2. [My main idea] -> The User will be able to make “Virtual Folders”. Actually, the Virtual folder will be normal folder containing shortcut (*.lnk) files. But in Total Commander all the shortcut files will be seen as shortcuts’ target files – the same like Virtual folder containing references to files which exist in different folders. Actually, “Feed to listbox” is creating some kind of temporary Virtual Folder.
3. The Virtual mode of a Tab could include more virtual redirections (not only for *.lnk files). Ideas for other file types are Welcome :)

P.S.: Imagine you create shortcuts to your most often used (favorite) directories and put them in one folder. If you open this folder in Tab with Virtual mode on, you will see all you favorite folders in one place ;)

So, what you propose are virtual folders but that proposal isn't new and you could have found it by searching the forum first.

There are several virtual folder plugins, try this:

You can unpack the targets of links with this plugin:

This is what junctions are used for...
