TC7rc3 - Compare By Content, Next/Previous and focus

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

TC7rc3 - Compare By Content, Next/Previous and focus

Post by *white »

Select two files and open the Compare contents dialog (menu Files/Compare By Content).

Clicking on the Next difference button or the Previous difference button will bring focus to these buttons making it hard to see where the next or previous difference is. When comparing small files which are shown completely on screen (no scrolling needed), clicking on the Next or Previous button seems to do nothing but bring focus to these buttons.

Now close the file compare window and again select two files and open the Compare contents dialog (menu Files/Compare By Content).

Pressing the access keys of the Next difference and Previous difference buttons will NOT bring focus to these buttons, but will move "the cursor" to the next or previous difference. So far so good. Now press Tab several times to bring the focus any place other than the panels containing the file contents. Pressing the access keys of the Next and Previous buttons will not change the focus, making it hard to see where the next or previous difference is. When comparing small files which are shown completely on screen (no scrolling needed), pressing the access keys of the Next and Previous buttons seems to do absolutely nothing in this case!

Suggestion: When the user activates the Next difference button or the Previous difference button either by mouse or by keyboard, change the focus as follows.
1 When the focus is on one of the panels containing the file contents do NOT change the focus.
2 Otherwise, bring the focus to the left panel (or to last accessed panel, like the Edit mode button).

Currently I have no plans to move away the focus from the buttons. The user may have gone to the button with TAB and pressed SPACE to activate it. The user would be very annoyed if the cursor then jumped away from the button...

The access keys Alt-N and Alt-P should bring focus to the button or to one of the file panels. It should not leave the focus where it is.

That is funny. Why would anyone want to keep pressing the space bar when this does absolutely nothing (while not in Edit mode and files fit on screen)?
I think in the current situation one would use the access keys Alt-N and Alt-P with focus on one of the panels.
It would be awkward for the user if the user would want to do a consecutive search using Tab en space only. However using tabbing and pressing space is always inconvenient. It is still available though. So I do not see the problem.
