Remember installation settings/options

Hi,

I first would like to state what brilliant application TC is...

A nice to have would be if the installation settings/options were "remembered" so that next update offers same settings as last install/update.

I, for example, don't install the shortcut on the start menu after the first install on my machine as I create a Windows "Shortcut key" in the TC shortcut that is on the start menu - when I upgrade and install the shortcut so the start menu again, my shortcut key is reset.

I would like to second this suggestion.

It is kind of funny how eager people are to point to the search function without providing any links. It might be possible that it has been brought up before, but that doesn't mean it is easy to find using "Search".
This vigilante behaviour almost makes me write a "nitpickers corner" stating "I HAVE SEARCHED - I CANT FIND IT" with every question/request I post.

Chill out dudes - we DO search!
Seaching doesn't always mean finding.

For this request, I found 2 posts:
http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=15280
and
http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=9523

And neither gives me the impression that it has the attention of Christian. The first is full of teachings about how to use the forum, and the second is from jan 2006.

Please be nicer to each other. If YOU know where to find something, let other people know. Don't just gloat.

Kind regards

If I understand correctly, you don't want TC to overwrite your shortcuts in the Start menu, when you upgrade.

You just have to select "No" when TC asks you if you want a program group in the start menu.

Yeah, but I upgrade through the betas regularly, so it would be nice if the installer remembered the options.

Every time you have to go through all the options, and make sure it doesn't install languages, write shortcuts etc..

NewsLeecher remembers these things. TC could too.

Thanks for the pointer, but modifying the install script every time, doesn't seem easier.

Don't have to do it every time, you say? How would I know that there wasn't a new setting, without having to check and compare.

So it would be nice if the installer remembered the options by it self.

I agree with you, this is not the best way. It's good for mass-installs for the first time but not for subsequent installs. If the installer looked for "install.inf" in the installation folder and if not found then it used the built-in one, it would be great. It would be even better if it "merged" both "install.inf"s (if some values do not exist in the external inf, it would use the built-in inf's values).
How would I know that there wasn't a new setting, without having to check and compare.
If there is a new install setting, the installer should use a default value for this setting in all cases (this is where the "merge" idea would help a lot). After all, the installer isn't changed that often...

I would recommend to make an extra directory in your start menu where all entries with keyboard shortcut keys are stored (assign the keys only there). This way nothing can be overwritten by installation routines.

Agree, this would make a better impression. However, I normally don't use any installer at all for TC updates:

The tcmd*.exe can be opened like a normal archive with Ctrl+PageDown. The same with the contained INSTALL.CAB.
After extracting from INSTALL.CAB the help from the subdir "e" (for english) has to be copied to the TC dir and you're done.

So I duplicate my existing TC dir, extract the contents of the new version to the new TC dir, then quit TC and rename old/new TC dirs using explorer.
