Set the option "Show custom fields below thumbnails" (see Configuration - Thumbnails) to:

Additional lines are only shown when no other thumbnails are displayed below.

\n is used to separate lines from each other. Writing \\ comments out the new line. Therefore it will not be counted by TC. I have no plans to change that.
