automatic update to newer versions ?

Hi there !

First of all I want to let you know that I love TC !!
It makes work so much easier for me...

My suggestion is:
Often I noticed that new versions are available only after some days/weeks by chance.

Wouldnt it be possible to get a message that there is a new version available ?
Or even an automatic update like in Mozilla Thunderbird e.g. ?

I am no technical, so please donĀ“t blame me if this is not possible. :-)

CHeers and keep this excellent work !

how about applying to the newsletter or watch TC on betanews.com ?

Automatic Update is thankgod never planned.
(FF has proven why it shouldnt be automaticly done :))

:? And why is that? It has worked just fine for me so far, both it's own as well as the plugins update (in "ask first, install later" mode of course).

I too don't think such a feature would be nice in TC. After all, it's a file manager not a web application. I'd like it for the plugins though. It's such a mess right now. It would be so much easier to auto-update them...

I strongly oppose to automatic updates of any application.
For my work I'm doing quite heavy calculations on the pc for audio or graphic purposes, so I probably would get quite berserk,
if suddenly some dialog pops up demanding a net-connection, or start some installation.
It could easily disturb the recording or rendering process.
To me, visiting this forum is enough to get track of the newer versions. Plus of course the newsletter, as a reminder.

Fully agree. New versions might also have new features/changes, that I don't like or that even cause problems. So I test first and update later.

Well, i feel like that too but i really like Automatic Notifications and an optional install upon notification (for plugins at least, not for applications). It would be much easier to manage the plugins if TC had an auto-notification system and optionally one-button install for them, like FF has.

I could go along with your argument about the plugins, but then the main keyword still would be 'optional'.
The comparison with FF is too plain, a browser 'plugin' is technically quite different from a TC 'plugin'.

I like Firefox's dual update features, first it checks to see if a new version has been released, and second it allows you to check all your add-ons (plug-ins) for updates with a couple of clicks.

I have a multi-computer license for TC, and I have to remember (manually, not easy for an old man like me :D) on each machine to update.

I know the TC programming team isn't as large as the FF team :D but a "Help" -> "Check for updates" option in the main program would be a very nice feature, as would an automatic CHECK for updates (NOT an automatic INSTALL of updates).

Thanks again for a wonderful program.

I agree with Wanderer.

Manual upgrading is something from the ancient past. It is near impossible to update every computer and on every computer manually upgrade every plugin used. People who don't like it, should be able to turn it off, or it can be turned off by default.

Installing and/or upgrading TC, is an additional step which keeps me from doing my job. And every additional steps must be eliminated, step by step.

So, the killer features for 2009:
- Automatic update function (including plugins)
- Bundle TC with MS Windows 8)

maybe just a new version notification? like opera/miranda-im has ?
for example :

Code: Select all

A new version of Total Commander is available
Your version: 7.04a
New Version: 7.05
To download go to official website.
This would be very useful, for me !

I think notifications are somewhat annoying. They should only be displayed when activated (check interval can be changed as well) by the user.

A menu point "Check for updates" would be useful. When clicked it checks for updates, provides to download and starts installing the update.

The installer itself should be no longer an obstacle...

I have considered that too. My idea for a very low resource update function would be to make a name server lookup for e.g. updatecheck.ghisler.com. The server would then return an IP address like 10.7.50.01 or so (10.*.*.* is unroutable address). This way the big internet providers would automatically cache the check in their name servers, which would take a lot of load from my server. A similar scheme is already used for spam block lists. What do you think?

Ah, I get it 10.7.50.01 = version 7.50 release 1.
What a simple yet clever idea - fantastic!
I was looking for a similar solution myself.
Are there any disadvantages to this system?
