Right now you always have to press ESC first, that's quite annoying.

Well, I guess that there are way more hotkeys that should definetely work in there – thinking about Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+P for example, or hotkeys which I am using for copying path to clip, like Ctrl+Shift+C, so what about enabling them all? I mean, the function key hotkeys work as well...

Anyway, as I get annoyed by this issue many times a day I really wish it gets some attention.
