[TC75b5] Gbit network copy slow

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

[TC75b5] Gbit network copy slow

Post by *CAP-Team »

Yesterday I installed Windows 7 RC x64, and when I copy some large >300 mb files from my Win2k3 server, the speed is about 8 megabyte per second.
I found this rather slow, since in Vista x64 I get speeds of up to 28 megabyte per second (using Total Commander 7.04).

Then I tested to copy the same files through Windows Explorer, and I got 56 megabyte per second!

In Total Commander 7.04a I get the same speeds as in Vista.

Seems to me there are serious improvements possible in Total Commander 7.5.

(don't know if this is a known bug or issue)

TC 7.5 now uses the Windows function CopyFileEx by default - it should give about the same speeds as the Explorer. You can revert to TC 7 copy method if there is any problem with the new default method: Configuration - Options - Copy/Delete.

I tested various options in the edit/copy settings, but still I get very disappointing copy speeds in Windows 7 RC in combination with Public beta 8.
Copying a 575 MB file from server:

After changing the settings I quit Total Commander and restarted it. It's the same file every time and to the same location.

Total Commander 7.50 beta 8
Use standard copy mode: 34 seconds
Use just default method only: 28 seconds
Also use big file copy mode: 25 seconds
Use copy and paste via Explorer: 13 seconds

Buffersizes:
Small files:
Source+target on same disk: 10240k
Source+target on different disks: 1280k
Big files:
Source+target on same disk: 10240k
Source+target on different disks: 64k

Total Commander 7.04a
Use just default copy mode: 24 seconds
Also use big file copy mode: 24 seconds
Use copy and paste via Explorer: 13 seconds

Any chance that something like Power Saving Options in Windows 7 may cause the slower copy speed?

It would be interesting to see what kind of activity is occuring during the copy/paste, and the other file read/writes, i.e. SysInternals ProcMon.exe : A combination of his FileMon and ProcExp apps.

And is Win7 using CopyFileEx ? Speeding up file read/writes was one of the major Win7 goals as Vista had crippled it to some extent by giving higher priority internally for multimedia (an extreme generalization, but close 'nuff).
*BLINK* TC9 Added WM_COPYDATA and WM_USER queries for scripting.

I'll have a look at the power options.

Changing power settings of the network adapter didn't change a bit in copy speed..

Try using the Explorer copy method: Configuration - Options - Copy/Delete.
