Wine folder listing oddity

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Wine folder listing oddity

Post by *Dominus »

When I use TC with Wine some folders are not listed. The top folder holds 206 folders under Wine, only 204 are shown.
And the problem can be limited to a couple of folders that share parts of the same name (grr, I knew it was possible to just copy the names of marked folders, but can't find that now):
Richie Rich and
Richie Rich and Billy Bellhops
Richie Rich and Cadbury
Richie Rich and Casper
Richie Rich and Dollar The Dog
Richie Rich and Dot
Richie Rich and Gloria
Richie Rich and his Girlfriends
Richie Rich and his Mean Cousin Reggie
Richie Rich and Jackie Jokers
Richie Rich and Professor Keenbean
Richie Rich And Timmy Time

"Normally" the folders
Richie Rich and Casper
Richie Rich and Dollar The Dog

will not be shown. When I rename other folders, then this will shift.
For example if I rename
Richie Rich and Billy Bellhops to Richie Rich and Billy Bellhops1
the folders
Richie Rich and his Girlfriends
Richie Rich and his Mean Cousin Reggie

will be invisible instead...
Anyone know what's happening there? (yeah I know wine, but I wanted to report it anyway)

So currently in the folder listing the folders
Richie Rich and Dollar The Dog\
Super Richie\
are missing.
Interestingly, the folders with ' in their name are differently sorted
(for example "Casper's Ghostland\") on Wine. My TC is on an USB stick with all the inis read from its folder, so the folder listing was made from the same TC with the same settings.

Hmm, very strange - at first, I thought that it might be caused by duplicate names which differ only in case, but this doesn't seem to apply here. Do they have any special attributes like hidden or system?

If not, can you try the different sorting methods via Configuration - Options - Display? These also determine where a file appears in the list.

Btw, I wonder whether you see the missing names in other places like the "File open" dialog in Lister.

The folders don't have any special attributes and the curios thing, as described in the first post, when I rename some other folder in there, it might happen that the ones missing before are then visible but some other folder is gone. The only pattern I could see, was that always two folders were missing.

Lister shows the missing folders but the file open window is very slow in refreshing when going "down" (actually scrolling right) the list.

The only information I left out before, was that the folders are on a NAS in my network, but I'm not sure if that is relevant since TC sees ALL folders when I open TC in my VMWare Windows XP.
AND (just checking) it is not the only folder that TC has problem with. I'm trying to find out at which count it starts to loose folders. Right now it seems somewhere between 100 and 200 it looses some...

Ok, tested it a bit.
When there are 119 folders TC will see all 119. Beginning with 120 folders it will not see two folders, so with 120 folders present it will see only 118 and so on...
It behaves like this on all my folders.

How does Wine access these folders? FTP? Windows shares (SMB)?

In OS X' Finder, I use "go to" and connect to the NAS via SMB, then I mount the folder Share on my NAS, which is then in /Volumes/Share.
Wine mounts my Systems root folder as z:\.
So in Wine I just go to Z:\Volumes\Share.

In my VMWare Fusion running XP, my system's root is connected via Netwok Share as Z:\. So in that VM I open the folder the same way, via Z:\Volumes\Share...

But it is connected to the folders on the NAS, when I copy the folderstructure without files in it to my system's hard drive, all folders are shown, in Wine TC...
Strange thing...

Hmm, upon verifying with the Wine file manager (winefile), it seems the problem is caused by Wine itself, since winefile sees too few folders as well.
Sorry to have bothered you with this, I'll give the Wine guys a heads up.

Edit: one other thing I found out, when browsing with winefile to /Volumes\Share instead of Z:\Volumes\Share all sub folders will be shown.
So maybe if it were possible for Total Commander to browse / as winefile does... :)

btw, is there a list of known problems of Total Commander in Wine?

I don't know. Programs that can open files do see it. Example Lister

Can you see it in the tree or the breadcrumb bar (triangle to the left of the path)?

No, it doesn't show in either one.
See the screenshot, first half is the breadcrumb bar, the other half is the tree view.

Hmm, I guess that TC is cutting off the trailing slash, so only an empty string remains -> it's skipped.
