New directory default name

Post by *ay222 »

when i execute the command cm_MkDir (Make directory) an empty input box is appear. is there is a way to fill this input box with a default name for the new directory?

if there isn't method to do so, can i ask Mr. Ghisler to add this feature to the next release?

Thanks.

:D Hi!
The most times, you'll have to remove this default name and type the right one... like to save a file in Paint or so...
 Such a feature'ld need an option to active it or not.
:?: Maybe a poll for this?

I don't know if it's possible to pass a parameter to cm_MkDir, I couldn't find the way how to do it.

For now you can create button with command
"command /c mkdir"
and parameter, eg.:
"New"

Of course it's creating directory via DOS command but TC ask you for a name of the folder with default "New".

2ay222You can use TCmenu or TCtoolbar addons. Using cmd.exe with pseudovariables and "?" parameter it is possible to make dirs based on current time/day/month.

You can also use TC Batch Script.

I agree. Also for other similar cases.
Clo wrote:you'll have to remove this default name and type the right one

If I want the right name I just type it.
Prompted text is already selected. (In TC too)

If I want a new dir without caring about its name, it probably is a temporary dir. So I prefer a default name that puts the new dir on top of the dir list.
Example: 01TMP or similar names.
It is easier to work with it and it is easier to remember to delete it, to move it or to rename it.

i don't know why they say "No"

I'm really wondering too why there is so much resistance against such a simple, reasonable feature that is already standard on Windows for many years (and on Mac too, as far as I remember). Furthermore there is no disadvantage for those that do not need the feature if the default name is preselected (which is standard too).
Currently I see only one little argument against it: There are many other more important features on the wishlist and this feature may not be worth the implementation time and the resulting enlargement of TOTALCMD.EXE. Remember: There are only about 2500 bytes left on a floppy disk for further improvements. But I guess this restriction must fall anyway sooner or later due to other new features.
So why not say "Yes" in addition of suggesting more or less cumbersome workarounds?

as far as there are only about 2500 bytes left on a floppy disk for further improvements, we will never see totcmd 7.0. and i'm sure adding such feature will never need all this 2500 bytes

Diskette problem...

:) Hi!
Worse! The last archive of TC is 1.4 MB, it doesn't be contained in new diskettes, which are 1.3 MB only! Even formatting under pure DOS, impossible to get 1.44 MB...
I think that Ch. Ghisler has still a lot of diskettes to send...
Unfortunately, a bigger new removable cheap support doesn't exist yet...
Moreover, the old PCs (including those running 3.1 / 16-bit still) have no provision to install such new devices, like a small USB-key (expansive) or so... I thought to 8-cm CDs, but they are more expansive than the normal ones...
 It's an insolvable issue at this moment... but I've an idea (not quite "ripe" yet)
:) Friendly,
Claude

only the "web" archive doesn't fit on a single floppy. If you unpack the "web archive" you'll see the contents of the SFX archive will fit on a floppy disk.
