Hi. This posting is addressed to Mr. Ghisler.

Since there is no forum section concerning the web site, I will post this here.

I've just realized that www.ghisler.com has 37.000.000 page views, so it would save bandwith to convert

http://www.ghisler.com/images/top.logo.gif
to
http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/9363/toplogox.png

which has only 4341 bytes, thus achieves file size savings of 23% compared to the .gif file.

Non-transparent .png files have been correctly supported by browsers for about 10 years and virtually all of todays gif-compatible browsers can also display .png files.

Fortunately the bandwidth is no longer the limiting factor on my current host, at least for small images. Just the file downloads need to be placed on external servers.

Maybe I got my calculations wrong, but

1296 bytes (savings) * 37.000.000 = 45731 GB

*looking surprised*

Anyway, if that's not of any relevance, this thread should maybe be moved or deleted.

Yes!
1296 * 37.5e6 / 2^30 =~ 45 GiBytes

Replacing "Count.cgi.gif" with alphanumeric text, every page view would save a total of 4,167Bytes (- number of bytes for text)!
4150 * 37.5e6 / 2^30 =~ 144 GiBytes.
:D

On my current host, I'm getting 1 TByte traffic per month...
