When setting up a copy (or move to a different drive) do a quick pass first looking for possible overwrites and prompt what to do with them.

During the copy if the same conditions existed as when the prompt was displayed the old answer is used rather than interrupting the copy.

Also, when you hit a situation that requires a prompt go on and do the rest of the job.

The issue is the copy freezing in the middle due to a prompt when you're not paying attention to it. Once again it happened to me--I threw 20gb of stuff onto an external drive. When I come back to it--oops, halfway through it found a dupe and stopped.

This does nothing about what I'm asking for. I still want to apply *MY* judgment to what to do on a case-by-case basis, I just want the conflicts offered up all at once at the start.

Furthermore, the problem isn't files that can't be read so the keep going option in there has no relevance.

There are more options there e.g. Overwrite all, Auto rename copied, Auto rename target etc...

May I reccommend using the Synchronization tool instead - here you can set the action for existing files per file in advance.

It's not a sync task by any means.

In this case I was moving stuff from one drive to another.

Then I suggest that you go back and change the title of this topic to: "Enhancement request: Check overwrites before moving files."


This should be moved to TC7.55 suggestions (English) anyway.

The same thing applies on move or copy. I'm not copying the whole directory and thus sync isn't the way to go.

Actually, what you want can be done with the SyncTool,
Do a [Compare]:

[x] Subdirs
[x] By Content

Unmark all the other icons except for [not equal]

There is your list of "same files" that are different.
Sync those files only as you wish, and then do your 20 GB copy with option [4] Overwrite all older.

Granted it is 2 steps instead of 1, it is possible - just not as streamlined as one might wish for.

Except it's not all the files. I selected a group of files to move. A copy of one already existed in the target directory and I didn't realize it. File dates don't matter--I'm skipping anything where the file sizes match. If the names match but the sizes don't then I have to figure it out by other means.

SyncTool has an option that automatically is checked when it is invoked and files are selected:

[x] Only Selected (in main window)
