File Comments checkmark Bug in TC 6.01
If I use an old-style (Norton Commander) menu for TC with separate view settings for the left and right file panel (example can be downloaded at http://hjem.get2net.dk/petermad/download/tc322-uk.htm) - then clicking on the option "File Comments" (cm_LeftComments or cm_RightComments ) sure enough enables file comment viewing and puts a checkmark to the left of "File Comments", but clicking a second time on "File Comments" does NOT move the checkmark and put it next to "Full View" (cm_LeftLong or cm_RightLong) although it does shift into "Full View".
It should work the same way as in the Standard TC-menu where a click on "Show" - "Comments" (cm_SrcComments) puts the panel in file comment viewing mode and places a checkmark left of "Show" - "Comments" - and a second click (or a Ctrl-Shift-F2 press) switches to full mode viewing and places the checkmark at "Show" - "Full" (cm_SrcLong).

Welcome on board!
I attempted to install this menu, and I got that follows:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/charries/relais/old-menu-problem.png
I guess that this command is no longer supported or so... ?
Glad to hear more about this,
Friendly regards and

I use the last updated <totalcmd.inc> dated December, 20, 2003.
It's the French version, in which I added the new commands that Christian G. sent to translate...

Then, I'll test again this menu.

No bug found...

>>> Lefteous
I found the cause: for that line, I'd
cm_SrcOpenDrives=231;Droite: ouvre liste lecteurs
instead
cm_SrcRightOpenDrives=231;Droite: ouvre liste lecteurs
Strange, because I never change the cm_xxx part of a command...? And I checked the total amount of commands as right before at translating...
I use that command rarely...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Hence, I installed the old-style Menu: that works fine at home, I can switch Display Comments >>> <<< Full view, either from "Right" or from "Left".
The same with Ctrl+Shift+F2, both sides. That works fine as a flip-flop command.
Test under Win 98SE (French)
I tested under XP-Pro too, that works the same: fine.
With the actual standard Menu:
¤ Win 98 SE, no problem (from menu and keys)
¤ XP-Pro, the same...

Friendly regards,
Clo

When I said "Work fine", I meant All works fine, including the tick-shifts.
Have you a large amount of free RAM always?
I noticed that some "covering" features like this no longer work under Win 98SE when the free available RAM ratio is too low...
Friendly regards,
Clo

I have just tested it under a fresh Win98SE installation with almost no applications installed - still the same. I also see the same problem on my wife's Win ME (US/English) computer.Clo wrote: I noticed that some "covering" features like this no longer work under Win 98SE when the free available RAM ratio is too low...
I have made a page with screenshots of all the supposedly impossible combinations of checkmarks with File Comments - it can be seen at:

¤ I remake a quick test and captures (just the menus, it's light!!!).
¤ Please, watch them:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/charries/relais/normal-ticks1.png
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/charries/relais/normal-ticks2.png
Beside the "New-style" *Show* menu, there is an extra-menu *Interface* (home-made)

¤ You're right, that is displayed on your screen-shot is really impossible!
But yet, it's!
Even with my "ancestor" P I 166-MMX, that works as it does, the same with my newest PC (2-CPU AMD 2000+MP - RAM 1 GB - Good A..s mother-board), under XP-Pro, like I told you already...
¤The one difference is that I use a French version of Win98 SE (build 2222 A), which is usually much more bugged than the US/English one!

{Edit} I think now to a graphic-card /its driver problem... ????
Hoping that you'll discover the reason of this strange thing,

Claude

Like you can see, all looks normal at home! It's with my "donkey-machine" which is only an old P II at 350 MHz - 96 MB of RAM (currently, ~45 MB free using a RAM optimizer / manager...)
Maybe your PC is bewitched??

But yet again - as I wrote previously - I see it on two different OS's in two different languages (Win98SE Danish and WinME English - the latter being a really baaaad OS).Clo wrote:More seriously, more I think, less I find a cause!

I don't believe it to be a graphic card problem - My wife and I have completely different graphic cards - and it is not just extra checkmarks "sticking" to the screen - then they would dissapear when the screen is redrawn - I can open and close the menu dropdowns and the extra checkmarks are still thereClo wrote: {Edit} I think now to a graphic-card /its driver problem... ????

Hello!
¤ Thank you for this reply, and details about your OSs...
You're right, Win ME is really pretty bad! My next-door neighbour had a Spanish (!) one, and she had one crash a day at least...
* My French Win 98 SE has been patched, because an original install-bug which make that some *.ocx, *.vbx an so where not installed, though they are in the install CD (French versions only)
¤ I just tried using a button in a tool bar to display source-comments, that works quite normally...
Are both your PCs connected together? I mean as a mini-LAN (i.e. using a simple crossed-cable to connect network-cards)
- If yes, I thought to a worm or so (not too naughty) which could remained in Mrs. Madsen's PC ???
¤ These tick-marks displays are "exclusive OR" logic functions... With such a bug, something might hang normally (like an interface lock-up).
Have you some pluggin(s) for TC installed?
¤ I continue to test and search...
Best regards, friendly,
Clo

Hello again!

"- If yes, I thought to a worm or so (not too naughty) which could remained in Mrs. Madsen's PC ???"
¤ I just contacted a friend who is a high-level technician at networks and PCs.
¤ He told me that he saw recently the same mark-shifts fault in IE...
¤ This is caused by a "nasty-file" -worm-like-, so-called <sys.reg>
¤ It causes mainly a false URL-display in the URL bar of IE, allowing hackers to display porn pages or so,
and causes too the same tick-shifts false display for some exclusive commands in menus.
can be found and destroyed in the Register in a ....\RUN key. Something like:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\(path)\sys.reg
- Could be located in another Reg. "hive" too, with the same path-style...
-Of course if existing, you ought to delete the file itself in the dir. (generally, <windows\system\> or around this).
Glad to hear you about this mystery,
Best regards,
Clo

No - the TC that I tested was without any plugins installed - just started from scratch with an empty wincmd.ini file - to exclude some odd configuration from my side.
I cannot understand why I seem to be the only one that is able to make this happen i TC?????

Incredible!

Hello again-again!
¤ I just watched your new captures, it's really quite incredible!
The most amazing are the false window-displays! This's more sérious than the false tick-shifts...
¤ I also tested many cases (less than you, however...), but I didn't get any false display following the ticked commands!
About the previously quoted worm-like file, please be very careful: this kind of file couln't be detected by usual AV softs, since it has no viral signature...
Whether you didn'make already, you could launch a search to find such a file in both PCs you have at home...
It could have also another name, info at:
www.f-prot.com which I use the free DOS version still, for years...
¤ I've a last test to do: If you agree, I think to translate your old-style menu in French (more comfortable for us...) and I'll ask for tests to friends and to my son...
{ EDIT } I found a minor error in your menu:
MENUITEM "&F&ile Comments\tShift+Ctrl+F2", cm_LeftComments
Further... exorcism!
Best regards,
friendly,
Clo
