Some suggestions

Post by *Luc »

Hi,

This is a list of new possible features I have been thinking about.
I hope it will bring some interest :)

1/ Passworded compressed files.
When I unpack a lot of files having the same password, it's a pity I have to retype (or paste) this password for each file. TC already allows saving ftp passwords so why not saving compressed files passwords or at least making the "enter password" process a bit friendlier ?
It would also be nice to use a special icon for passworded compressed files in a list (if that does not create too much slowliness).

2/ Ftp downloads/uploads
Would it be possible to put these tasks in background ?

3/ Cataloging
I know it's a bit of a task but it would be great to be able to catalog and search for removable media content using TC.
I have ideas on how to do it but I'll let your imagination flow for development (if you care to do it :) )

My 2 eurocents

Happy New Year !

You can already do FTP up- and downloads in the background - you just have to check the checkbox "Upload in background (separate thread)" or "Download in background (separate thread)" in the dialog box that comes up when you press F5.

But - you cannot later on chose to use BTM once the up/download is started, as you can with local file copying.

Exactly.
The problem is that you always figure out you have to upload/download a second file after starting the first one. :)
There's a workaround opening a second instance of TC but that's IMHO annoying and not consistent with the local transfer process (as you rightly said).

I just tried it now and guess what, I think I found a bug in TC !
I fisrt installed the "Catalog 2.2" with the ".lst" extension. That wasn't what I wanted so I installed the "Disk Explorer Professional 1.2" with the ".ded" extension. When I press Alt+F5, the optional packers only show ".lst" in the dropdown and not the ".ded" so I can't use the second plugin.
Do you think it's a bug or is there something else I missed ?
How can I remove the WCX I installed ? I see no option for that ...

From .ded plugin readme:
"This plug-in allows you to see contents of
Disk Explorer Professional Database files."

In the configuration window choose the extension from the list, then associated plugin will appear below. Delete the line with the path to packer and press OK.

Where can I find the CatalogMaker plugin ? I can't find it in the plugin list.
I am using "Advanced Disk Catalog" at the moment. It's great but it has nothing to do with TC (it's just another proggie).

It's just the same what Catalog ;-)
It's described on Ghisler's page as Catalog but in readme there is "Catalog maker Plugin version 2.2" and the file's name is CatalogMaker.wcx so I usually call it this way. :-)

It's enough for me cause I can browse the .lst files as catalogs (pressing Enter not F3), use TC searches in it, etc.

The problem is that TC would have to close the current connection and reconnect again to get the file in background. That implies two problems
- you might not be able to log on (user limit reached, because someone managed to log on before you did relogin)
- the server might not support resuming, so the file would have to be downloaded from the beginning again.

Hi, as far as I know TC can't do that. But another utility "MacroExpress", might help you. With MacroExpress you can easily program macros, that control mousemovements as well as keystrokes.
You can get MacroExpress here: http://www.macros.com/

In my opinion MacroExpress is like TC also an absolute must have utility :D
Best regards
Lars
