ActivePDFView Plugin Available

Post by *JohnFredC »

ActivePDFView 1.0
Released 12/29/2003

ActivePDFView is a lister plugin (WLX) for Total Commander V5.5 or greater. It allows the user to preview a PDF file in either the TC QuickView panel or in the floating TC lister window and with much of the utility provided by the standalone Acrobat Reader.

NOTE: The Acrobat Reader must be installed on your system in order for the plugin to work.

• The readme.txt file included in the zip archive should answer most of your questions.

• MaxWish is kindly hosting the download at http://www.clubtotal.tk/.

Thanks for a new plugin.
Some notes and questions:

- It doesn't allow to view several files at the same time.
- There is sometimes problem with closing it using Esc.
- Is there any difference with viewing pdf file using your plugin and using ieview plugin?

Hi djk

All of your questions (except the issue with Esc, which I will look into) are covered in the readme.txt file included in the archive.

Thanks for trying the plugin. I'm still learning.

Try directly:
http://clubtotal.free.fr/

http://www.clubtotal.tk/ is only the alias for this page and it doesn't seem to work correctly in last days.

BTW: I don't know why you report it to me, Maxwish is an owner of this great page, not me. ;-) Of course it's my pleasure to help you :-)
There is also another great page with plugins (and not only): http://www.wincmd.ru/ (Russian), Unfortunately there is no ActivePDFView there, yet (I'm sure it will be soon).

when closing the lister ,the acroreader remains open :-(

but anyway , i don`t find any reason to use it, because it needs the same time to open as the original reader.
the quickest way to view pdf is a small exe-File named pdfview, which is around 300kb, but needs ghostscript intalled ,like the other pdfview-plugin.

I would like to know, if AcrivePDFView makes use of the Acrobat Reader <!> even if the Acrobat Writer is installed. In this case, the use of this plugin makes sense, because the Reader loads much faster than the Writer.

Thanks for your reply.

ActivePDFView uses the AcroRD32.exe ActiveX Acrobat Reader control. (hence the name, which Lefteous so kindly suggested).

On my system (Windows XP Pro), AcroRD32 disappears from the Task Manager processes list when the TC lister closes. What happens on your system?

I will look into the problem you reported. Unfortunately I have never seen a running instance of Windows ME, so am not optimistic about solving the issue.

In the meantime, since one of the IE Lister plugins will give you exactly the same functionality as ActivePDFView for PDFs, perhaps using one of them would work better for you.

AcroRd32.exe process still remains active on my computer (I can see it in processes in Task Manager window) after closing lister. It works this way both for ActivePDFView and IEView plugin.
I work on WinXP Pro (as I remember it also work this way on WinNT but I can't check it at the moment).

Apparently this behavior is not related to the ActivePDFView per se.

On my system (XP Pro) the AcroRd32.exe service/task always unloads.

Ok, i found out the reason for this behaviour, it has nothing to do, which windows-version i use.
Because the AcroRd32.exe loads some DLL, these DLLs prevents acroRD32.exe to finish in these plugins.

When i force my system, for instance with a tweaking-tool like Tuneup-Utilities, to unload all Dll after finishing one program, the AcroRd32.exe unloads perfectly ;-)
Unfortunately i don't know the place in the registry to do it by hand.

Maybe the authors can persuade their plugs to unload those librarys, that i don`t need to do it in general.
