64bits version of totalcommander

Post by *dpalmans »

Hi,

I love to use tc in winpe x86, unfortunatley it doesn't run in winpe x64. Could you release a native x64 version? That would be awesome.

Thanks

And Chris should care about WinPE X64 why?

Its not something that is distributed by MS so as TC runs under Win7 x64 its kinda hard to find the error in a frickeld Windows Version and very easy to blame TC... :D

1) Why being so negative?
2) what's not distributed by MS, winpe? yes it is.
3) all new systems now ship with x64 OS, it's time to embrace it... Yes they still can run 32b apps, they can also run 16 bits and DOS, should we continue to develop for DOS?

2petermad: thanks for the link

2dpalmans:
Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) 2.0 is a minimal Win operating system with limited services, built on the Windows kernel. It is used to prepare a computer for Windows installation, to copy disk images from a network file server, and to initiate Windows Setup.

Hi, folks.

All right. This sentence in the article which petermad pointed us to - thanks - explains why Total Commander 7.56a cannot run on a WinPE 64-bit system:
Windows PE Limitations wrote:Windows PE is a subset of Windows Vista, and has the following limitations:
[...]
  • Windows PE does not include the “Windows on Windows 32” (WOW32), “Windows on Windows 64” (WOW64), Virtual DOS Machine (VDM), OS/2 or POSIX subsystems.
  • To install a 64-bit version of Windows you must use a 64-bit version of Windows PE. Likewise, to install a 32-bit version of Windows, you must use a 32-bit version of Windows PE.
So it is not a matter of Christian caring about WinPE 64-bit or not. But the reason is that there is no WOW64 in WinPE 64-bit. Without this SysWow64 sub-system 32-bit applications like Total Commander cannot be run on Windows 64-bit.

With respect to the initial question whether it were possible to release a 64-bit T.C. version, Vochomurka had already pointed to the relevant threads which explain what the current state is.

Very briefly, the answer is: Not at the time being. But maybe in the near future.

Kind regards,
Karl
