Missing "Open as" in context menu

I often use the "Open as" feature for opening files of unknown associations.

I must have done something, because suddenly this option has disappeared from the context menu.

Renaming the file to a different extension has no effect.

I'd appreciate any advice.

"Open as" is shown only when there is NO association for a certain file type.

So:
1. Why doesn't it help to change the extension, even to a "gibberish" string, for which there is presumably no association?
2. Any tips on how to find out which application is associated with a file type without checking the defaults for each installed application?

1. That works for me! What icon is shown for files with a "gibberish" string? If there is an app which has registered */* as mime type, it would be responsible for all files, and TC wouldn't ever show this option.

2. Only via the icon, or by trying to actually open the file.

Btw, you can still define an internal association in such a case.

Strangely enough, it now suddenly works again, without clearing any defaults.

I really can't think of anything specific I did to clear this up.

Anyway, thanks for the support.
