LAN-Plugin too slow to use with Win8

Hi.
The LAN plugin used to work great with my Windows XP computers - which are no longer in use and were replaced by Windows 8 machines.
When I load the LAN plugin and point at my computer using the main Windows login information, it takes about a minute just to get the directory listing. If I click on a folder I specifically shared for file uploading, it takes 2 minutes. If I start copying files, the WiFi indicator on top goes nuts, but nothing arrives on my computer.
I am addressing my computer using it's LAN IP address, and I don't know what else I can try to make this work again.
Any suggestions?
