PLEASE READ ALL

Configuration> Color> "Define Color by File type"
you can ALSO
set the color of the line
You can also define "the Background Color of the LINE of text" for that file type.

It's an easy change,
and it gives a lot to the Total Commander.

Because it allows better organize files.

In fact, I use Total Commander to organize things I have to do.
----
Ideally:
you can directly press right mouse button on a file or directory, and
you can assign a color and background.
That's very easy to do and it would be fantastic.

As there are many people who use Total Commander to organize better.
So you can better organize the files, folders, and things you do and also organize life.
----
Then you need to keep in mind, that if I copy or I move that file to another site
keep the color of the letter of the name (file or folder) and the background color (of the line).

----
And if I go to another computer, and everything is in the same directory,
You can export and import the colors assigned.

The export should be in a text file,
I could edit inside the folder name and the name of the files.
Even I could copy and paste and edit lines. :D

STILL MORE IMPROVED --> BACKGROUND COLOR" (of the LINE of Text) in "Define Color by File Type":

* In "change button bar"
in "Command"
in "configuration"
(add command) "Define Color by File Type". :D

* And add the possibility of
"BACKGROUND COLOR" (of the LINE of Text)
in "Define Color by File Type". :D

(that is:
Select Text Color
Select Background Color).

* And first show
the "pentagon or hexagon" which has MORE PREDEFINED colors,
and then the option "More Colors"
and you leave the mouse cursor choice of colors. :D

* And add in "Define Color by File Type"
"export" and "import"
in text file. :D

TC9 will support different background colors, but not by file (it looks horrible), but by directory or directory type (e.g. for connections).

A per file/folder color is a good idea but it shouldn't be a background color. Beside that it would look probably terrible look it very much conflicts with the selection. In Apple Finder there is a coloring system that displays the color in a reserved space right next to the filename.

Some more ideas:
- Use coloring as illustrated above instead of text color
- Use simple color assignment in addition to existing rule-based colors. similar to this: http://lefteous.totalcmd.net/tc/ideas/item_coloring_simple_assignment.png (could be a small dialog as well)
- Consistent use of colors in tab headers and in file list
