Why Everything in TC 9x ??

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Why Everything in TC 9x ??

Post by *Nigurrath »

Hi all,
I noticed yesterday for the first time the option for the program “everything”

I wish to ask
- How much resource consuming it "really" is?
- Is it safe enough? I mean it's a program which scans everything in the file and same it in a db.. humm
- Is it portable, I mean I can easily strip any registry setting from it, include in TC installation folder and keep the whole portable movale, like it is now?
- Why it is now “by default” into the TC interface?

But most of all which are the real advantages using it, since I see that it only indexes the filenames and not the content, something that TC is already able to do without extra programs. Or at least was already possible with a plugin..

Thanks!

TC doesn't index file names at all.
TC search just travels the file system to search files according to your search term.
Everything uses the MFT to index NTFS file systems and so the results are almost instantly available.
There are enough information available about Everything in its FAQ and help pages:

I see,
there is something I don't really like in this external app.

I'd prefer not having it among the preferences of TC and eventually having the opportunity to hide its checkbox.

It's not harmonized with the rest of the inferface, it moreover has a low and bad integration with the rest of TC, if not else because the search interfaces and syntaxes are not integrated.

This is optionally, no one forces you to use it. For me - this is the great feature ....
It's impossible to lead us astray for we don't care even to choose the way.

If you don't set the Everything switch in TC search it will not be used and also not be switched on on the next search invocation.
No one will program out features just because you don't like it.

Same for me.
Even the current minimum integration is a big advantage for searching.

Sure, for the integration there is room for improvement.
Nevertheless it is optional, so don't use it if you don't like it.
