TC 9.0 and VeraCrypt

TC 9.0 and VeraCrypt

I am testing the use of a program called VeraCrypt that is trying to be the successor to TrueCrypt.

I created the file containers and attached them to my system as drive letters. I have no problem seeing the drive (contents and drive label) through Windows Explorer but not through TC 9.0. The container is 10G, encrypted with AES(Twofish(Serpent)) with other parameters (but I am not sure what would be relevant)

I tried to find a reference to this here but cannot. I have had no issue with TrueCrypt with the same container parameters. Is this an issue?

Help and advice would be appreciated?

Do you run TC with elevated privileges, i.e. as administrator?

You didn't describe what your error is.
If just TC doesn't see the drive or give an error on access or what ?

My apologies as I was not clear enough.

I run TC with administrator privileges.

The issue is that if I try to access the drive through TC
1. The drive pull-down notes the drive but not its assigned label
2. Accessing that drive, TC responds with a "Drive Not Found".

I have an image but cannot figure out how to embed it in this message.

Does it work when you run TC normally (not elevated)?

I can access Truecrypt volumes just fine when mounting them with VeraCrypt (Windows 10). It works with TC running with normal user rights and as administrator.

Please give me more details of your problem.

Thank you for the quick response. I am running Win7 Pro, SP 1.

As to more details, there s not much more to give. Clicking on the properties of the TC icon, I navigate to the "Compatibility" tab and have the Privilege Level checked for "Run this program as Administrator".

When I double-click on the icon, I get a dialog box that asks me if I want the "program to make changes this computer". I click on "Yes" and TC comes up. At that point, accessing the VeraPoint drive returns the "Drive Not Found" message. That is all I can discern.

However, based on Dalai's suggestion, I unchecked the Privilege Level check box described above. TC comes up without any messages AND the VeraPoint drives and labels are now visible and accessible.

I am not sure what agency is at work here but the above situation is consistently reproducible on my machine.

Hello,

I really wish I could figure out how to embed or send images. Please advise on this.

I noticed that TC 9.0 was indicating a drive ("I") that I had not mapped. Again, Windows Explorer did not indicate that drive but TC did.

I decided to reboot my machine. Upon gaining control back, I ran the same tests with the "Privilege Level" that I performed earlier. I now have two (2) drives mapped to drives "J" and "L".

These are my findings:
1. With "Privilege Level" off, I can now see both drives with no issue.
2. However, drive "L" is also duplicated as drive "G"

3. With "Privilige Level" on, I can see drive "J"
4. I cannot see drive "L"
5. Drive "G", which is supposed to be "L" is visible and accessible

As both drives are subject to automated processes, "G" and "L" are not fungible.

Again, all this is reproducible here Win7 Pro, SP1.

Drive H: and K: are removable drives, correct? Can you try to use the encrypted container from an internal hard drive?

is veracrypt configured to unmount volumes after a time of no use? in this case the drive letter assignment is lost.

Dalai,

Drive H does not exist on my machine but is reserved for special uses. Drive K is the removable drive upon which the VeraCrypt containers reside.

As to your question, what-ever the result of your question, it is not the purpose and usage to which the containers are used or required. However, I did copy on of the files onto my hard drive and assigned it to the "B" drive. I now have the B drive but also the H drive and the G drive. The latter two (2) should not be there

Thank you for responding but your response, while it may be true, has no bearing on this issue. The volumes can be clearly seen to be mounted so your statement does not make sense in this context.

As a user, I cannot discern whether the issue is with VeraCrypt, Total Commander or somewhere in between. I have verified that native Windows Explorer does not exhibit the drive letter issues I am having with TC 9.0. As a developer myself, I would appreciate the technicians weighing in on the issue.

c2Walter, have you tried assigning the veracrypt volumes to different drive letters, for instance y: and z:? If somehow there is a conflict on your system in drive assignments, then keeping your veracrypt volumes away from the affected letters may help.

(ps: Another solution in that case could be Uwe Sieber's "USB Drive Letter Manager" from http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html. This page also has a link to further information about problems like the one you are reporting).
