Saving Excel sheet created under Total Commander

I got following problem. When I create new excel sheet under Total Commander and try to save it I got "save as type" and text comma separated although I set default saving type as Excel sheet. This is not a problem when I try create new excel sheet on windows desktop.

I would appreciate your help.

When you create a new sheet on the desktop, Excel is creating a full featured excel sheet, which happens to be empty. Total Commander does not know about xls files, so it creates a really empty file (length 0). Excel thinks this is an ascii file. I assume you create the file in TC with Shift F4.

I create excel sheet by right clicking and then new /excel sheet.
So there's no solution for this problem SanskritFritz?

Hmm, then it is indeed a Total Commander problem. I just reproduced the problem, almost the same here (the difference being that it is an Excel5 format). Creating a new xls on the desktop is ok.
The thing is, TC creates the context menu itself by imitating the default context menu. So if Microsoft decides to change the creation of new files, TC hast to adjust itself to it, which is a tedious work. I suggest to start Excel, and you get a new file anyway, but as you press save, the location will be MyDocuments. Lets wait to Mr. Ghisler's answer, he is a regular reader here.

TC should take the excel sheet from the templates directory. Unfortunately it's not documented where Explorer looks for the template files, so there seem to be multiple possibilities. Try to copy the Excel template file to
c:\Documents and Settings\<our user name>\Templates
then it will work. The template file is usually called excel.xls or excel5.xls .

Btw, out of curiosity, where is the file stored on your system?

I have 2 files in that dir:
excel.xls
excel4.xls
Interestingly enough excel.xls is the wrong old format, and New... from the desktop seems to take excel4.xls.
