Select any file and try to change its name to an invalid name (by pressing Shift+F6):
- when new file name is: ... (three dots) - you get the error message
- when new file name is: \\\ (three backslashes) - you get the error message
- when new file name is: /// (three slashes) - you get NO error message, file name is not changed
- when new file name is: ??? (three question marks) - you get NO error message, file name is not changed

Forward slashes get removed, so you don't get an error. Try e.g. ///newname.
??? are wildcards. When you rename e.g. test to ???, you get the first 3 characters tes as the result.
